Design and Implementation of a Four Phase 4 kW Switched Reluctance Motor Drive and Improvement of its Input Current Quality With Current Source Rectifier Amir Rashidi 315 amir@gmail com Date of Submission 2009 07 04 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Sayed Morteza Saghaiannezhad saghaian@cc iut ac irAbstract Since 1969 switched reluctance motor due to the advent of inexpensive high power switching deviceshas been proposed for variable speed applications It has wound field coils of a dc motor for its stator windingsand rotor does not have windings or magnets Concentric windings and low resistance low moment of inertia brushless comparable power density negligible mutual coupling higher or comparable reliability and low costare features unique to this machine only Thus SRM drives are ideal for many industrial applications However SRM drives suffer from poor operating power factor which will result in more losses in power distributionsystems Therefore improving the power factor is very beneficial to enhancing commercial competition of SRMdrives Vibration and the resulting acoustic noise in SRM is another disadvantage of this machine In this thesiswe represented the introduction to SRM its principle of operation and the equivalent circuit The magnetizationcharacteristics of the 4kw 8 6 switched reluctance motor are achieved Simulation of the drive system requiresmodels for the SRM drive subsystems and their interconnections are considered The simulation procedure isillustrated with results Converters and their classification principle of operation design considerations andmerits and demerits of each converter and their impact on the machine output are presented and some importantconfigurations of converters used in SRM drives are compared and discussed Two stage power converter isproposed to improve power factor of this drive The first stage consists of a controllable converter with sixswitches and six diodes and it interfaces input of a three phase ac supply to a single phase variable frequency acoutput This stage is a controlled rectifier but without the drawbacks of a low power factor and high input lineharmonics Usage of CSR in SRM converter input results in eliminating dc link s capacitors which keeps theexpenses of implementing this model unchanged and in the enhancement of the reliability of the scheme and inincreasing the power density of it The other power stage is asymmetrical SRM that used due to its highperformance and with this configuration the phase currents can be independently controlled Another importantfactor of this high performance topology is fast commutation According to identified advantages this topologyis recommended for many different applications The frequency spectra of the input phase current for both cases shows that the proposed converter considerably improve THD of the current with correcting power factor and inaddition it s possible to control the speed by controlling the link voltage using the modulation index To verify the proposed method theoretical analyses of mathematical modeling and computersimulations with MATLAB Simulink have been performed and experimental result is presented In the end there is a summary of thesis and suggestions for further studies Keywords Switched Reluctance Motor Power Factor Current Source Rectifier Space VectorMoulation
