Investigation of confined quantum systems H2 in ellipsoidal cavity hydrogen atom in ellipsoidal cavity and hydrogen atom in spherical cavity using B splines basis set Tahereh Nikbakht Email address taherehnikbakht@gmail com Date of Submission May 27 2009 Department of physics Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor M Barezi Email address barezi@cc iut ac ir Abstract In this thesis eigenenergies and eigenfunctions of three confined quantum systems Hydrogen atom in spherical cavity Hydrogen atom in ellipsoidal cavity and H2 inellipsoidal cavity have been calculated using linear variational method B splines havebeen used as basis functions which can easily construct the trial wave functions withappropriate boundary and cusp conditions The main characteristics of B spline are its highlocalization and its flexibility Model has been used to solve this problems is that instead of considering effects ofconfinement on a system we suppose that each particle in the system is located at aconfining cavity and with increasing confinement cavity volume decreases Accurate results obtained for hydrogen atom in spherical cavity but about two othersystems we encountered with mathematical problems in numerical calculations and theresults don t have good accuracy Nevertheless these results are suitable for investigationgeneral properties of the systems Key WordsConfined quantum system B spline Hydrogen atom H2 molecule Variational method
