Responses of Transition Cows to Chromium and Grain Source of Diet and Studying Gene Expression of Insulin Signaling Related Factors in Dry and Early Lactating Dairy Cows Hassan Sadri sadrih@ag iut ac ir sadri ha@gmail com 2009 Department of Animal Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSupervisorsDr G R Ghorbani ghorbani@cc iut ac irDr H M Rahmani hrahmani@cc iut ac irAdvisorsDr A H Samie Dr N Nili College Graduate CoordinatorDr F Nourbakhsh Department of Animal Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranAbstractIn experiment 1 and 2 repetition of Exp 1 thirty two multiparous Holstein cows wereused to investigate the main effects and interactions of supplemental chromium L methionine Cr Met 0 and 0 08 mg of Cr kg BW0 75 and grain source of diet barley vs corn on performance and metabolic responses during the periparturient period Therewas no Cr effect on prepartum dry matter intake DMI or postpartum DMI bodyweight BW net energy balance and whole tract apparent digestibility of nutrients Prepartum DMI as a percentage of BW tended to increase with Cr Met SupplementalCr Met tended to increase milk yield whereas milk protein percentage decreased Pre and postpartum DMI BW net energy balance milk yield and milk composition werenot affected by substituting ground barley BBD with ground corn CBD The additionof Cr Met increased prepartum DMI and tended to increase postpartum DMI of theBBD but not the CBD There was a trend for decreased beta hydroxybutyrate andincreased cholesterol on calving day d0 in cows fed the Cr supplemented diet In wk3postpartum plasma glucagon concentration tended to be greater in cows fed the Crsupplemented diet and was also higher for cows fed the BBD compared to the CBD However other plasma metabolite and hormone measures were not affected by Crsupplementation and grain source of diet on d0 and in wk3 postpartum In wk3postpartum a significant interaction of chromium and grain source was found only forplasma concentration of blood urea nitrogen that was lower in supplemented CBD andhigher in supplemented BBD These results demonstrate that the beneficial effect of Cr Met supplementation during the periparturient period to improve feed intake maydepend on the grain source of the diet The treatments have only moderate effects onmetabolic and endocrine parameters In experiment 3 gene expression of adipose
