The Metallurgical Evaluation of Synthetic FeAl B Intermetalic Compounds Gholam Reza Saleki Salek 1400 @ yahoo com August 8 2009 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiDr Mehdi Salehi Prof Supervisor E mail surfacesalehi@hotmail comDr Mehdi Ahmadian Assist Prof Supervisor E mail ahmadian@cc iut ac irAbstractIron aluminide FeAl has been widely studied because of its excellent high temperatureoxidation and corrosion properties At high temperatures FeAl generates a large number ofthermal vacancies and the vacancy concentration increases with increasing aluminumcontent The mechanical properties depend on the vacancy concentration Increasing vacancyconcentration will increase the hardness and decrease the ductility of FeAl Ternary alloyingelements except boron have little effect on the hardening at high temperature and canincrease the hardness after long time anneals at low temperature Small boron additions areknown to reduce the intergranular brittleness of some intermetallics due to theirintergranular segregation The sharpest decline occurs around the composition where thefracture mode changes from transgranular to intergranular Boron shifts this ductile brittletransition to higher Al levels by segregating to the grain boundaries and suppressing grain boundary fracture FeAl B intermetallics with different amounts of Boron 250 500 750 and 1000 ppm produced using vacuum arc melting process The hardness grin size and wear behavior ofspecimens wear investigated The results show that with increasing of Boron up to 1000ppm The grin size of the intermetallic decreased grin size distribution improved and the hardnessof FeAl B alloys decreased with increase the amounts of Boron The wear behavior of theintermetallics investigated using pin on disk method Steel 52100 choosed as the abrasivedisc The wear experiments were down under different loads including 1 2 and 3 kg Theresults showed that with increasing the amount of Boron in the intermetallics the wearresistance increased Key WordsIntermetallics FeAl B Boron Hardness Grin size Wear
