Inelastic seismic response of asymmetric R C dual structural systems under bi direction excitation Mohammad Sadegh Birzhandi ms birzhandi@yahoo com 22 April 2009 Department of Civil Engeenering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Dr Amir Mahdi Halabian mahdi@cc iut ac irAbstractMost of researches on elastic and inelastic earthquake response of asymmetric buildingshave performed using single storey models idealized with simple lateral load resistantshear beam elements These researches have led to different and sometimes contradictoryresults emerging from their initial assumptions On the other hand some practical issuesrelated to the ductility demand of asymmetric buildings with dual lateral load resistantsystems have not been considered The effect of resisting planes perpendicular to theearthquake excitation for different asymmetric buildings under multicomponent groundmotions along with the multi story effect on inelastic torsional behavior of these structuresare not fully understood In the present study aimed towards the understanding thesecritical issues the inelastic seismic response of eccentric multi story dual lateral loadresistant R C buildings is investigated subjected to an assemblage of ordinary and near fault ground motions Symmetric frame basis of these models were developed using thegeneric structures algorithm Then asymmetric buildings were created by adding shearwalls in both two principal directions The nonlinear behavior of beam elements isidealized using moment curvature theory while fiber model is utilized to represent theinteraction among tension compression axial force and biaxial bending in column elementsand shear walls modeled by panel elements This approach of modeling is more accuratefor multistory dual lateral load resistant structures because it redefines the stiffness fromthe strength in each time step The concept of stiffness eccentricity is modified and used toevaluate the torsional responses of the models The torsional responses of models includingthe ductility demands for stiff and flexible edges elements are normalized to thecorresponding values of the symmetric cases The distribution of the normalized ductilitydemands along the height of the structure is used to assess the torsional effects inmultistory structures Key WordsSeismic response Asymmetric structures Torsional response Ductility demand R C dualstructural systems
