Qualitative Simulation of Water Resources in Complex Hydrosytems Case Study Koohpayeh Segzi Aquifer in Isfahan Iman Moslehi Baharanchi iman2193@cv iut ac ir 9 6 09 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiDr Hamidreza Safavi hasafavi@cc iut ac irAbstractIn systematic view groundwater and surface water are not isolated components of the hydrologicsystem but are rather closely integrated in the hydrologic cycle The two water bodies interact in awide variety of physiographic and climatic landscapes where the mechanisms of interactions areinduced by either natural or anthropogenic causes Therefore alteration of one whether to its quantityor quality leads to change in other Oftentimes due to exist of calculation complexities quantitativeand qualitative interaction of groundwater and surface water is not considered in simulations and thesetwo water resources are simulated separately This subject can has significant influence in planedmanagement policies Therefore the conjunctive simulation of groundwater and surface water can beconsidered as an efficient tool in watershed management One of type s surface water groundwater systems is the stream aquifer system Simulation of solutetransport in a stream aquifer system is composed of two main components Theses are the simulation ofwater movement and the simulation of solute transport The first component incorporates groundwaterflow in the aquifer surface flow in the stream flow interaction between the aquifer and the stream TheSecond component incorporates solute transport in the aquifer solute transport in the stream and thesolute interchange between the stream and the aquifer In this research qualitative simulation of a complex hydrosystem including of Koohpayeh Segziaquifer and Zayandehrud River passing from it has been studied Considering the fact that majoractivity in this region is the agriculture the most important source contaminant of the aquifer areagriculture effluents that cause to increase exist cations and anions concentration especially chloride sodium calcium and magnesium Considering the fact that these contaminants are utterly soluble TDSis selected as qualitative index variable Because of conservative nature of contaminants predominantmechanisms in solute transport within the porous media and river are advection and dispersionmechanisms Qualitative simulator model of this complex hydrosystem has run in the unsteady state forfive stress periods After calibration of the qualitative model in this complex hydrosystem obtainedresults from this simulator model were compared with gathering samples of observation wells and thevalidation of simulation was confirmed Also consequences of sensitivity analysis for dispersivitycoefficient parameter in shallow and deep aquifers demonstrated that model is not sensitive withrespect to this coefficient In other words predominant mechanism in solute transport in this complexhydrosystem is advection mechanism Furthermore with investigation and analysis of model outputs the fundamental and key role of Zayandehrud River in affecting on water quality of aquifer isconfirmed Key WordsQualitative Simulation Stream Aquifer System Complex Hydrosystem TDS Koohpayeh Segzi Aquifer Zayandehrud River
