Simulation of Gaseous Mixtures in a packed bed of unfixed particles Amirreza Rastegari rastegari@mec ir Date of Submission 2009 08 11 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mahmud Ashrafizaadeh mahmud@cc iut ac irAbstract Multicomponent flows of miscible fluid mixtures through packed beds of spherical particles are studiedin this thesis An algorithm for the simulation of randomly packed beds of spherical particles with differentranges of diameters is developed Using a linear optimization routine statically unstable particles inside thestrucre are detected To simulate the flow inside such a complicated geometry a model based on the latticeBoltzmann method is investigated Recovery of Navier Stokes and Stefan Maxwell equations is proved forthis model The application of boundary conditions for these simulations is also discussed Based on adetailed analysis for the mass and momentum conservations on the inlet and outlet a new in out flowboundary condition for multicomponent flows is also developed Radial point interpolation technique isutilized to deal with the multiple grid requirements of the lattice Boltzmann model for mixtures Using thistechnique the deficiencies of previous simulations in complicated geometries are resolved Applicability ofthe discussed methods is studied for a number of test cases Numerical results for the multicomponent flowsare in very good agrrement with those of single component flows A grid study has also been conducted forall test cases Keywords Packed Beds Caged particle detection multi component flow simulation miscible fluidmixtures Lattice Boltzmann Method
