Genetic Variation and Selection Indices in Isolated Lines from Local Population of Flax Mozhdeh Moshksar m moshksar@ag iut ac ir Date of Submission 16 9 2009 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc language FarsiSupervisors s name and Email address Ghodratollah Saeidi gsaeidi@cc iut ac ir AbstractFlax Linum usitatissimum L is one of the oil seed crop that its seed oil and crushed seed meal is usedin different industries in human diet and for feeding of livestock This study was conducted to investigategenetic variation for different agronomic traits and the selection indices for yield improvement In thisexperiment 30 isolated lines along with 6 landraces were evaluated in a randomized complete blockdesign with three replications at the Research Farm of Isfahan University of Technology in 2008 Theresults showed that there were significant differences among the genotypes for all of the studied traits The traits of branches plant capsules plant and 100 seed weight had high correlation with seedyield plant and Days to 50 emergence capsules plant and seed yield plant also had high correlationwith seed yield plot Seed oil content was determined for 10 lines with higher seed yield and this trait hada variation 36 62 to 39 26 and high broad sense heritability The result of stepwise regressionshowed that capsules plant 100 seed weight and seeds capsules contributed in 98 of phenotypicvariation for seed yield plant The path analysis revealed that capsules plant had the most direct effect onseed yield plant Cluster analysis classified the genotypes to 4 distinct groups in which the genotypes ofgroup 3 and 4 had the highest seed yield plot The estimates of direct response to selection showed thatselection for higher seed yield plant and capsules plant can improve the seed yield The highest correlatedresponse to selection for seed yield plot was obtained via the and for seed yield plant and for seedyield plant via capsules plant Therefore these traits can be used as selection indices for geneticimprovement of seed yield The Smith Hazel and Psek Baker indices were constructed based onbranches plant capsules plant seeds capsules and 100 seed weight The results showed that here was lowcorrelation between each of these indices and their selection efficiency was relatively low therefore itseems direct selection for seed yield should be more effective than using these indices The results alsoimplied that constructing Smith Hazel index by using heritability of the traits instead of their relativeeconomic weights Smith Hazel 1 in comparing with using the equal economic weight for all the traits Smith Hazel 2 had the same efficiency However since the heritability can be simply estimated andexpress the relative importance of the traits it can be suggested to use the heritability instead of theeconomic weight The results also indicated that the Smith Hazel index was more effective than Psek Baker for simultaneous improvement of branches plant capsules plant and seeds capsule Key Words Genetic variation Correlation Agronomic traits Path analysis direct andCorrelated response selection
