Investigation on the thermal retardant of textiles impregnated with ceramic powder using infrared thermometer Mahdi Ramezanpoor m ramezanpoor@tx iut ac ir Date of Submission 2009 10 20 Department of Textile engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language persian Supervisors M Ghane m ghane@cc iut ac ir Abstract The main aim of this work is to investigation on the thermal conduction properties oftextiles by means of impregnating the fabrics with ceramic powder The fabric is immersedin a solution consist of ceramic powder a special wax and its solvent In this way theceramic particles are dispersed uniformly in the fabric voids The aim of the wax is toconnect the ceramic particles to the fibers without any change in fabric flexibility In orderto study the thermal conductivity of the produced fabrics a hot plate was designed andmanufactured The hot plate has a uniform temperature is 1 degree centigrade In order tomeasure the temperature of the cool side of the fabric infrared thermometer fluke 62 wasused Three kinds of ceramic powder were used i e silica kaolin and calcium carbide hasmore effect on reduction of thermal conductivity of the fabrics in comparison to the othertwo The increase of the percentage of ceramic powder leads to reduction of heatconducted through the materials A thin aluminum sheet was also used to make amultilayer construction consisting of two layers of fabrics and a layer of aluminum sheet inthe middle The multilayer of fabrics and aluminum sheet showed considerable effect onthe reduction of thermal conductivity in comparison to the same two layers of fabricswithout the aluminum sheet A method is also presented to calculate the thermal coefficientof the fabrics using the heat transfer equations Key word Thermal retardant inferared thermometer hot plate ceramic powder
