Thermal properties of quilted material using wadding Leila pouryamehr l pouryamehr@iut ac ir April 19 2009 04 20 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor s Name and Email address M Zarrebini mahoot12@yahoo comAbstractNonwoven fabric have gained a significant proportion of total world textile output to theirvaried properties and diverse end uses In applications such as bedding and quilts nonwoven products function as thermal insulation Therefore it is of vital importance toinvestigate thermal properties of the nonwovens used in these applications In this work the effect of factors such as fiber mixture and fiber variable together with theeffect of fabric production parameters such as mass in per unit area and porosity onthermal resistance of nonwoven filling material wadding have been investigated After a brief introduction to nonwoven relevant information on thermal insulation andthermal resistance of nonwoven is presented An instrument to measure thermal resistanceof the experimental samples has been designed and built This instrument is based onShirley Togmeter that was launched in the 1960s and is the standard apparatus for BS4745commonly known as the Tog Test This resistance is expressed in terms of Tog value Influence of fiber variable such as fiber kind and its length and fineness together withphysical properties of the samples such as mass in per unit area and thickness on the togvalue have been determined using the designed Togmeter Result and Statistical survey showed that Tog value increases with increases in fiberfineness and length and decreases in porosity of sample This phenomenon was alsoobserved when the percentage of hollow polyester fiber in mixture with ordinary polyesterfiber was increased With increasing in percentage of polypropylene fiber in mixture withordinary polyester fiber at first Tog value was increased and then decreased Optimumvalue of Tog were achieved at proportion of 65 and 45 for hollow polyester ordinarypolyester and polypropylene ordinary polyester respectively It was also observed that Togvalue tends to increase up to a mass per unit area of 450 g m2 Beyond which the Togvalue deacreases Key words Thermal insulation thermal resistance Wadding Tog Togmeter
