Isfahan University of Technology Department of Textile Engineering Three dimensional characterization of air textured yarn By image processing Sanaz Behtaj s behtaj@tx iut ac ir November 2009 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiH Tavanai Tavanai@cc iut ac ir S Sadri Sadri@cc iut ac ir Abstract Air jet also known as cold fluid alongside with false twist and bulk continuous filament BCF constitutes the three major yarn texturing processes employed by the textile industry Texturing imparts bulk to the flat continuous filament yarns improving the comfort in wearas well as the cover of the final fabric Air jet texturing uses a supersonic turbulent cold airflow to produce a deformation mainly in the form of loops along the overfed filaments of theyarn surrounding the entangled and rather straight parts of the filaments in the core mainbody of the air jet textured bulked yarn Air jet textured yarns resemble spun yarns and enjoy a special surface frictional effect thanks to the loop form structure making them suitable for seat coverings floor covering anda wide range of clothing Volume core diameter overall diameter average loop length andloop frequency constitute the basic characteristics of an air jet textured yarn Although several classic subjective techniques and modern methods based on image analysisalgorithms have been used to characterize the air textured yarn structure however all ofthese techniques have used a two dimensional image of air textured yarns to analyze thestructure As these techniques do not cover the complete picture around the air jet texturedyarn this research was aimed at producing novel algorithm based on mainly Radontransformation wavelet transformation as well as Canny algorithm capable of precisecharacterization of the three dimensional structure of air jet textured yarns Also an algorithmsuitable for measuring the volume of the yarn was obtained The algorithms weresuccessfully applied to a range of air textured yarns Key wordsAir jet textured yarns 3D characterization image processing Radon and wavelettransformer canny algorithm
