۶Land Evaluation for Suburban Agriculture Using Analytical Hierarchy Process Technique A Case Study in Zarinshahr and Mobarakeh Vajihe Shahrokh v shahrokh36@yahoo com December 9 2009 Department of Soil Science College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Dr S Ayoubi ayoubi@cc iut ac ir Abstract Land suitability evaluation is the fitness of a given tract of land based on its potential for a defined use The objective of this study was to evaluate land suitability evaluation of Zarinshahr and Mobarakeh area located Isfahan province using FAO approach and Analytical Hierarchy Process AHP method Quantitative evaluation was carried out after the qualitative evaluation The economical studies included collecting the economical data comparison of inputs and outputs and analysis of gross income Potential yield was calculated using the method proposed by F A O The result of potential yield analysis showed that the potential yields were determined 9 01 and 11 01 t ha for wheat and rice production respectively The quantitative land evaluation and their classes were defined according to incorporating observed yield and marginal yield with the qualitative evaluation results The predicted yield varied from 1 4 to 7 and from 1 2 to 6 5 t ha for wheat and rice respectively The significant relationship between the observed yield and predicted yield indicated the appropriate selection of the factors and evaluation approach Based on the quantitative evaluation most of the land units wheat was identified that had more suitability than rice in the study area Use of the qualitative quantitative and economical assessment selection of the best land utilization types in each land unit is possible The analytical hierarchy process provides a methodology for multi criteria analysis and decision making Based on the AHP method designed a spreadsheet package called EXPERT CHOICE and it was used to calculate weight for each layer It has an ability to calculate weights for multiple criteria using pair wise comparisons At first the hierarchy structure for evaluation has been constructed The overall objective was to select the best land utilization type in each land unit Three alternative land utilization types to be evaluated the cultivation of wheat rice and greenhouse were in the lowest level The intermediate levels of the hierarchy comprised seven criteria for evaluating the alternative land uses soil climate gross income water resources market physical environmental impacts and chemical environmental impacts After the questionnaires have been filled out by experts the overall weight for each element in one level was calculated by multiplying its local weight by the priorities and their real standardized attributes The results of this study showed that the climate suitability was the most important factor priority 0 338 for the selection of the best land use followed by soil suitability priority 0 228 and the least importance was contributed to market priority 0 024 It was found for all the matrices the inconsistency ratio was less than 10 percent When RI 0 1 it is considered to be acceptable This indicates that decision makers are exhibiting coherent judgement in specifying the pair wise comparison of the criteria or alternatives From three alternative land uses studied greenhouse was the most appropriate on consideration of all seven factors then cultivation of wheat and rice respectively Climate suitability and gross income were identified the major factors affecting the suitability for greenhouse The cultivation of rice is not recommended in the study area because of negative environmental impact including soil physical destruction non efficient water consuming arising of ground water surface and increasing soil salinity Key words Land evaluation analytical hierarchy process land suitability Zarinshahr and Mobarakeh
