Dynamic Response of Cracked Timoshenko Beams Subjected to Moving Masses Alireza Ariaei alirezaariaei@yahoo com Date of Submission March 15 2010 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran S Ziaei Rad 1 1st Supervisor szrad@cc iut ac ir M Ghayour2 2nd Supervisor ghayour@cc iut ac ir M Keshmiri3 Advisor mehdik@cc iut ac ir M Keshmiri Department Graduate Program Coordinator Associated Professor Abstract One of the most important problems facing structural and design engineers is the analysis of dynamic behavior of bridges subjected to moving loads In this thesis the DET formulation for moving point mass was extended to Timoshenko beams subjected to distributed moving masses Also vibration analysis of beams with open and breathing cracks subjected to moving masses was investigated The differences between two models of crack namely open and breathing cracks are investigated and shown that the breathing crack model shows less deflection in compare with the open crack model Being lightweight thin and easy to bond on the damaged structure the piezoelectric patch can be designed with minimum adverse effect on the global behaviour of the structure This thesis extends the use of piezoelectric patches for the repair of cracked Timoshenko beam subjected to a moving mass using transfer matrix method Based on Timoshenko beam theory the dynamic response of an elastically connected multiple beam system was also investigated The identical prismatic beams are assumed to be parallel and connected by a finite number of springs Also the chaotic response of a Timoshenko beam subjected to moving masses with a non ideal support in between was analysed Key Words Timoshenko beam Moving mass Breathing crack Chaos Piezoelectric Assumed modes 1 Introduction Moving loads have a great effect on dynamic stresses in such bodies and structures and cause them to vibrate intensively especially at high velocities Therefore a great amount of work dealing with the dynamic analysis of structures due to moving loads can be found from the existing literature In the following survey a brief summary of the more relevant works is presented The problem of a concentrated force moving with a constant velocity along a beam when neglecting damping forces was solved by Timoshenko 1 and an expression for the critical velocity of a moving mass was found A comprehensive treatment of the subject for the vibration of structures resulting from moving loads has been given by 1 Professor 2 Associate Professor 3 Associate Professor
