Design construction and performance study of biofilter to remove vinyl chloride from air Seyed Hamid Esmaeili Faraj h esmaeili@ce iut ac ir Date of Submission February 2009 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M sc Language Farsi Supervisors M Nasr Esfahani mnasr@cc iut ac ir M KadivarAbstractNowadays environmental pollutants especially in the air are one of the most important humane concerns Theharmful effects of pollutants on human s health and its results of changes in climate and environment redoundthat the struggle of these pollutants be very important In this respect biological methods due to highperformance and low cost are the most important methods of process therefore in this study the Biofilterationprocess is used for the feasibility of degradation of vinyl chloride as a hazardous material in the air stream Thissystem has three biofilters in a series parallel way that allowed accessing the current of food and moisture forall bed points Type of these biofilters was biotrickling filter and a continuous flow of liquid was established inthe bed Granular activated carbon mixed with vermicompost as carrier bed Microorganism of the process isprepared from a composite of two types of activated sludge one from the Abadan petrochemical and the otherfrom Isfahan refinery Dimensions of the biofilter are as pilot plant scale and liquid and gas flows are as co current from top to bottom During testing of the system variables such as temperature pressure PH liquid andgas flow rates and vinyl chloride concentrations in input and output gas stream of each column are measured Theresults indicate that during the 110 day system be success to remove over 35 of inlet vinyl chloride that withregard to the low degradability of chlorinated organic compounds is considerably Max elimination capacityvalues were calculated for each of the three column in the first second and third column were 0 8 0 45 and 0 5gr m3 hr respectively Elimination capacity values for one minute empty bed residence time and the flow rate ofgas input 0 45 m3 hr were obtained Also by study of length effect during the bed obtained that bed lengthincreasing redound increasing in removal efficiency and decreasing the concentration of output gas The resultsof experiment to determine chlorine amount in the liquid flow return from columns show that during three days18mg Cl lit the amount of chlorine is added in the reservoir theoretical mass balance of Chlorine around thesystem also confirm this result All the results are expressed that about 35 remove the amount of vinyl chlorideis obtained by biological degradation
