111 Zohreh hosseini Email address hosseini@cc iut ac ir 17 12 2010 Department of natural resource Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Language Farsi Degree M Sc Sayed Jamaledin Khajedin Email address Khajedin@cc iut ac ir N Mirghafari Abstract During recent years remotely sensed data have been widely applied in identifying and analyzing land use and land cover changes These data provide accurate change detection of earth s surface and consequently a better understanding of human and natural phenomena relationships and interactions are supplied for perfect resource management There are various methods for land use and land cover change detection such as post classification time series data classification and PCA analysis Post classification is one of the most effective change detection methods The aim of present research is detecting the occurred changes in mounted up stone cutting and building debris wastes in Isfahan vicinity as well evaluating the affects of these wastes on the studied areas desertification MSS TM and ETM LANDSAT images aquised on 1975 1990 2001 respectively plus LISSIII data of IRS satellite aqused on 2005 were used in the current study to map the trends of stone cutting waste deposited area changes First of all geometric correction was performed to all images To classify images supervised and hybrid classification methods were applied which the last one is a combination of supervised and unsupervised classification methods Finally land cover maps were produced whit 7 classes including stone cutting waste pasture and barren lands shail formations vegetation cover urban areas saline lands and outcropped rocks for TM ETM and LISSIII images Five land cover classes including shail formation outcropped rocks saline lands vegetation cover and other land uses were detected whit MSS image For produced maps accuracy assessment error matrix and kappa coefficient were calculated Post classification comparison method was performed to detect the land cover changes The Change detection results proved that the most waste cover changes have accrued during 1990 2001 which the waste cover has increased up to 229 3 hectares The deposited waste affects on desertification studies stated that they have affected the vegetation cover soil landscape and topography We are faced with entire vegetation disturbance on the waste deposited sites The soils of waste deposited sites are compacted while its structure has altered and physical soil degradation have accured under the waste carrying trucks pressure Discharged stone cutting sludge are liquid type which penetrate in the soil and changes the chemical characteristic of the soil Vegetation losses originate soil ecology destruction Waste deposited site distance from residential areas roads and high ways is not considered so they have a bad looking landscape for the region Waste deposited sites topography has changed consequently the surface runoff water ways are altered as well Considering the effects of wastes on the region it is necessary to locate them on the appropriate sites and then the healthy wastes deposition could be programmed by the town councils and responsible authorities Key words Solid waste stone cutting Desertification change detection land cover
