The Effect of Silver Thiosulfate STS and 1 Methylcyclopropene 1 MCP on Enhancing Storage and Vase Life of Cut Gerbera Fatemeh Honardan f honardan@yahoo com 23 February 2010 Department of Horticural Science Collage of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof Ali A Ramin aa ramin@cc iut ac irSupervisor Assoc prof M Mobli Mobli@cc iut ac irAbstractIran because of it s geographic location suitable climate and closure to consumer markets especiallyPersian Gulf states has the potential to produce ornamental plants such as cut flowers Gerbera is one often commercial cut flowers in the world and fourth reputation of cut flowers in the world is assigned to it This flower is semi sensitive to ethylene and has short vase life Silver thiosulphate STS is a standardindustrial material that despite of its contraindication in some countries is used to prevent ethylene effectin cut flowers 1 methylcyclopropene 1 MCP is a non toxic gas that is known as an alternative to silverthiosulphate recently and its overcome effectiveness on external ethylene in many cut flowers andornamental plants is identified This material connects to ethylene receptors and prevents of ethyleneactivities Considering the sensitive nature of gerbera to post harvest damages short vase life of somevarieties and absence of researches on anti ethylene materials for this flower this research is arrangedwith the aim of increasing the vase life and storage life of cut gerbera flower with Silver thiosulphate 1 methylcyclopropene and determine the best concentration of these two materials In order to ourpurposes in the first experiment with silver thiosulphate in two parts first using two preveservationsolution sucrose and 8 hydroxyquinoline sulfate Second sucrose only and 4 concentration of zero control 0 1 0 5 1 mmol per liter at temperatures 20 C in the second experiment 1 methylcyclopropene in four concentration zero control 0 5 1 1 5 micro liter per liter at temperatures of20 degrees centigrade and third experiment with Silver thiosulphate with 4 concentrations zero control 0 1 0 5 1 mM per liter at 4 C temperature some Physicochemical properties were measured Experimental design was a factorial combination based on completely randomized design with threereplications and two flowers per each replication The results of the first experiment indicated thesignificant effect of silver thiosulphate on relative weight the water potential percentage of water offlower the absorbed solution index vase life and pH of preservation solution In addition results showedthat the 0 1 mM silver thiosulphate improved physicochemical properties and increased the vase life ofcut gerbera flowers than other treatments In the first experiment also silver thiosulphate indicated thatdeletion of the preservation solution 8 hydroxyquinoline sulfate silver thiosulphate is still effective onvase life of gerbera cut flower The results of the second experiment showed that 1 methylcyclopropenedid not have significant effect on the relative weight thickness of petal and preservation solution pH buthad significant effect on antocyanin the water potential of petiol percentage of flower water absorbedwater index and vase life Comparison of averages showed that the 1 5 micro litre per liter 1 MCPfollowing negative effects on some characteristics of flowers such as vase life Concentration of 0 5 and 1micro litre per liter showed the same results as control Results of the third experiment showed that silverthiosulphate in 4 C temperature is effective on the storage life cut gerbera flower Similar to the firstexperiment 0 1 mM silver thiosulphate increased the storage life of cut gerbera more than the othertreatments Keywords cut flowers Gerbera silver thiosulphate STS 1 methylcyclopropene 1 MCP vase life and storage life
