The Effects of Mycorrhiza and Super Absorbent on Growth Characteristics of Berseem Clover under Different Levels of Water in a Calcareous Soil Ramin Rostami rostami ramin@yahoo com Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiM Zahedi E mail mzahedi@cc iut ac irAbstractWater deficit is an important environmental stress which adversely affects crop production inmany agricultural areas The effects of water deficit can be reduced by inoculation of plant rootswith mycorrhiza fungi or by application of super absorbent materials in soil This experimentwas conducted to evaluate the effects of the inoculation of plants with mycorrhiza and the use ofsuper absorbent on the morphological and physiological characteristics of berseem clover atdifferent levels of soil moisture For this purpose the inoculation of plants with five species ofmycorrhiza including Glomus etunicatum G versiforme G mosseae G intraradices and G fasciculatum were tested in the first experiment In the second experiment the inoculation withGlomus intraradices and the application of super absorbent were evaluated on the growthcharacteristics of berseem clover under three irrigation regimes 100 50 30 of fieldcapacity There were significant reductions in plant height leaf area shoot and root dry weight total and special root surface root length the concentration of P in the roots leaf proteinpercentage and the mycorrhizal colonization of plant roots at lower compared to higher levelsof soil moisture In contrast the root diameter and the leaf proline concentration weresignificantly increased under water stress Plant height leaf area shoot and root dry weight shoot root ratio the concentration of P Zn and Cu in shoot and roots total and special surfaceof roots and root length were significantly increased in inoculated compared to uninoculatedplants In general compared to other tested species Glomus intraradices was superior in termsof colonization and its positive effects on growth and nutrient uptake of the plants There weresignificant interactions between irrigation regimes and the application of mycorrhiza on shootdry weight leaf area root surface and root length The extent of the increases in plant dryweight of inoculated plants was greater at lower compared to higher levels of soil moisture Theapplication of super absorbent in soil caused significant increases in plant height leaf area shoot and root dry weight shoot root ratio total and special surface of root and root length The results from this study showed that the inoculation of plants with mycorrhiza can improvethe performance of berseem clover under water stress through its positive effects on nutrientuptake of the plants Moreover the application of super absorbent materials can mitigate theadverse effects of water deficit on the growth of berseem clover in low watering conditions Keywords Berseem clover Water deficit Mycorrhiza Super absorbent Growth parameters Nutrient uptake
