Isfahan University of Technology Department of Civil Engineering Stabilization of a Sandy Soil with Liquid Polymers By Shima Barezi Supervisors M Vafaeian S M Abtahi AbstractSandy soils with considerable distresses such as low strength or high permeability may not beappropriate for use as a structural support These soils may not bear loads and can causedamages to overlaying structures A suitable ground improvement technique is needed toconfront these problems Using custom materials such as cement lime and bitumen in soilstabilization project involves with some problems Today with using new chemical materialssuch as enzymes and polymers a great change has been occurred in this field Mixingchemical materials such as water soluble polymers is a new technical method to meet therequirements that is needed for sandy soils The main aim of a ground improvement techniqueis increase in strength especially bond strength of the mixed soil A comprehensivelaboratory work was carried out in order to study engineering properties of mixed soils Extensive research has been conducted using chemical additives Chemical additives wereprepared using water along with different percentages of polyvinyl acetate or acrylic resinemulsions Experiments were performed in two series of laboratory works One series usingunconfined compression test and the other one direct shear test Experiments in compressivetests were performed through columns filled with these soils Experiments in direct shear testswere performed through boxes filled with these soils The experimental results of twolaboratory tests reveal that addition of polymer emulsion improves substantially the physicaland mechanical properties of the mixed soil The results were carefully investigated andfinally show that the physical and mechanical properties of the mixed soil were enhanced Keywords sandy soil ground improvement chemical additives polyvinyl acetate acrylicresin unconfined compression test direct shear test
