Study of Structure and Antibacterial Properties of PP PE Bicomponent Fiber Containing Nano Silver Omid Rostami or rostami@tx iut ac ir Date of Submission 21April 2010 Textile Enginnering Department of Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Morshed M Youssefi Abstract In the past few decades antibacterial activity has become a significant property of textiles used in applications such as medicine clothing and household products There are two main methods by which antibacterial finishing can be carried out during processing of textiles The 1st method the antibacterial agent mixes directly with polymer melt or sulotion during the spinning process and the other method treats the textiles with the agent during a finishing process Silver is a nonItoxic inorganic metal and is a safe antibacterial agent It has been reported that nano silver is a strong agent capable of killing ca 650 diseaseIcausing organisms in the body In this research sheathIcore bicomponent melt spinning of polypropylene PP as the core and polyethylene PE as the sheath was carried out Sheath core bicomponent fibers were melt spun by coIextrusion of PP and PE nanosilver masterbatch In this study nano silver masterbatch was added only to sheath component of polymer The fiberU 7967 9 0 9 affected by processing conditions such as draw ratio and percentage of sheath component The influnce of concentration of nanosilver on the properties of the fibers have been studied The thermal properties morphological structure and physical properties such as tenacity elongation at break and crystallinity were investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy FTIR WIangle XIray Diffractometry WAXS Differential Scanning Calorimetry DSC Scanning Electron Microscopy SEM and Transmission Electron Microscopy TEM respectively Also optical properties of fibers were studied by Reflection Spectrophotometer Additionally other parameters such as cross section of fibers distribution of nanoparticle in the spun fibers were also investigated Antimicrobial tests were carried out using AATCC 100 test and ASTM E 2149I01 shake flask methods on the melt spun samples The effect of parameters such as nanosilver content in the fibers fibers fineness percentage of the sheath of fibers on antibacterial properties of the sheathIcore bicomponent fibers have been investigated The results indicated that decreasing the percentage of sheath component of bicomponent fibers increased the tenacity Moreover increasing the amount of nano silver masterbactah decreased the tenacity of the sheathIcore bicomponent fibers slightly when compared pure fibers The SEM and TEM results showed that the silver nanoparticles were not Agglomerated The results of the DSC thermogram and XIray diffraction indicated that the crystallinity of fibers decreases by increasing the amount of nanosilver The results of antibacterial tests show that the fibers with nano silver in sheath had excellent antibacterial properties even when silver content was very low Key Words Bicomponent fibers Nanosilver Polypropylene Polyethylene Structure of fibers
