Production and characterization of Cr C coating electrodeposited from a trivalent chromium contained bath Soroor Ghaziof s ghaziof@ma iut ac ir April 12 2010 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors M A Golozar Prof K Raeissi Assoc Prof AbstractCr C alloy coatings were electrodeposited from a trivalent chromium bath containingformic acid on copper substrate The coating had amorphous structure with a homogeneousgranular morphology containing cracks The effects of plating parameters such as pH andcurrent density on composition structure morphology and corrosion behavior of as deposited coatings were investigated Results showed that the suitable current density forCr C alloy deposition is increased as the pH is decreased Furthermore by decreasing thepH higher amount of carbon was introduced into the coatings The Cr C alloy coatingsdeposited at lower pH showed higher passive current density By annealing the amorphousCr C alloy coatings at 300oC a nanocrystalline structure having higher hardness wasobtained However the corrosion resistance was seen to be impaired Annealing at 600oCled to the precipitation of Cr23C6 which resulted in a higher hardness The formation ofCr23C6 enhanced the corrosion resistance of coatings due to an increase of corrosionpotential However formation of micro cells between the Cr23C6 precipitates and bulkchromium prevented the formation of passive film In addition wear behaviour of thecoating showed that the wear mechanism includes the adhesion and abrasion wear Thecoatings after heat treatment at 300 oC for 1 h exhibited better wear resistance than theamorphous coatings The coatings were electrodeposited on steel substrate too Activeanodic behaviour was observed for Cr C coatings deposited onto steel substrate Evaluation of coatings produced on steel substrate with different surface preparations showed a crack free surface morphology coating on the anodically etched surface Thiscoating also showed the lowest porosity which provided the most barrier effect and thusled to the lowest dissolution of steel substrate KeywordsCr C alloy coating amorphous nanocrystalline annealing corrosion resistance
