Investigation of the Sorption Kinetic Behavior of Some Chemical Elements in Unconventional Waters by Tire Chips in Porous Medium Moazam Khaleghi Khaleghi 83@gmail com October 13 2010 Department of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiJ Abedi Koupai Assoc Prof Supervisor koupai@cc iut ac irS S Eslamian Assoc Prof Supervisor saeid@cc iut ac irAbstractScarcity of proper quality water is considered one of the most important problems in arid and semi arid areassuch as Iran On the other hand the population growth and increasing environmental pollution need solutions forthe elimination of water deficiency One solution is the reuse of non conventional water resources includingwastewater and drainage water There are various methods to improve water quality that among them method offiltration is an effective and efficient method to remove elements The most important part is to filter the selectionof adsorbent materials There are different types of synthetic absorbent that due to high price its application hasnot been conventional In this work the tire chips were used as an inexpensive and easily available adsorbent Absorption tests column field trials was conducted in two distinct steps using two types of water including saltwater with electrical conductivity equal to 6 4 dS m and the initial pH equal to 7 7 and industrial effluents withan electrical conductivity equal to 13 3 dS m and the initial pH of 6 5 Each test was conducted as a factorialexperiment with three factors based on a completely randomized design with three replications Three factorswere studied including particle size 2 5 mm and 3 5 cm filter thickness 10 30 and 50 cm and contact timewith adsorbent solution 2 4 6 and 24 hours for salt water and 0 5 1 2 4 6 and 24 hours for industrial effluents The results showed application of tire chips as filter 30 centimeters in thickness and contact time of 24 hours for treatment of salt water had the best performance The electrical conductivity of water was reduced 20 3percent Also in this treatment the maximum amount of sodium adsorption ratio was observed This ratioincreased up to 29 3 percent and the pH value decreased by 6 5 percent In the test with industrial effluents thebest performance of reducing the salinity was observed in the treatment with 50 centimeters thick and 24 contacthours The salinity of this treatment was reduced by 11 2 percent This filter reduced the heavy metals of lead zinc and manganese up to 99 72 1 and 41 4 percent respectively Also the results showed that the performance ofmillimeter and centimeter particles in the most measured parameters do not differ with each other In the batchtests to evaluate the absorption equilibrium time the removal efficiency of lead zinc and manganese were 67 2 74 3 and 39 9 percent respectively Comparison of column and batch tests showed that the efficiency for theremoval of zinc and manganese was similar but the effectiveness of the removal of lead is higher in columnbecause the lead did not reach equilibrium in the batch absorption tests Time to reach equilibrium for zinc andmanganese were 180 and 120 minutes respectively Time to reach equilibrium for lead was more than 180minutes because during this period an increasing trend was observed The results fitted with metal adsorptionisotherms showed that the Freundlich adsorption model was the best compliance with regression coefficient equalto 99 percent Key words unconventional water filtration method tire chips column absorption batchabsorption tests adsorption isotherms
