Abstract In this research the possibility of formation Electroless Ni P coating on AZ31 Magnesium alloy by commercial SLOTONIP70 bath was investigated In this regard firstly surface preparation condition to receive the optimum properties of coatings was studied Also in each stage of surface preparation optimum conditions were introduced Then preparation and condition of the commercial bath for Electroless Ni P coating on AZ31 Magnesium alloy was investigated After coating in optimum conditions X Ray analysis Scanning Electron Microscopy SEM and Energy Dispersive spectroscope EDX were used to characterize the coatings Heat treatment of the coating was done in different temperature and the hardness of cross section surface of substrate alloy and coating was determined befor and after heat treatment The corrosion behavior of coatings in different thicknesses and heat treatment conditions was evaluated by polarization curves in 3 5wt NaCl solutions It was found that 15 m was the minimum thickness required to protect the substrate from corrosion and heat treatment reduced the corrosion of the coatings For investigation tribological behavior of the coatings firstly topographic of the coating before and after heat treatment were investigated by Atomic Force Microscopy AFM and roughness parameters were calculated for each coating Then pin on disk test was performed in 4N 6N and 8N to investigate wear behavior and friction coefficient of the coatings The result showed that the crystallized cauliflower like structure coating content about 3 4wt of phosphorus sand blast process before coating was necessary stage to inhibit crack formation in the coatings Since the hardness of coating was increased and the hardness of base alloy was decrease due to grain growth during heat treatment of the coating temperature below 300 C was recommended for heat treatment of Electroless Ni P coating on AZ31 Magnesium alloy
