An Improvement in Water and Oil Repellency Properties of Fluorochemicals by Changing Textiles Surface Configuration Monireh Saffari m saffari@tx iut ac ir Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Dr Akbar Khodami Khoddami@cc iut ac ir Dr Alireza Moradi Moradi a@cc iut ac ir Abstract Fluorocarbon components are the most important class of water and oil repellent finishes for the textiles due to their ability to provide optimum performance in terms of both hydro and oleophobicity Hybrid fluorochemicals contain both highly fluorinated and highly hydrophobic polymer segments within a single chain molecule so the desired surface energy in air or in an aqueous environment can be attained The polarity of the environment thus determines the surface configuration of the polymer and the surface state in air while the hydrophobic groups lie below the surface However on immersing the treated fabrics in water the hydrophilic groups orient toward the polar aqueous environment with the accompanying collapse of the fluorochemical groups below the surface The net result is that the release of oily stains is strongly promoted At the end of the aqueous washing cycle and during the drying of the fabric reorientation the hybrid copolymer occurs again but this process can be incomplete because the act of drying happens at low temperature in air Regarding some hybrid fluorochemicals it has been recommended that the washed fabric be hot ironed in order that the high temperature imparted to the fabric activates the molecular reorientation of the perfluoroalkyl residues because of the maintenance of their efficiency without any need for ironing or drying at high temperature is of importance In this research to control the decay of the hydrophobicity during washing three categories of compounds have been used crosslinking agents dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea DMDHEU maleic acid MA and itaconic acid IA and diisocyanates extenders e g lauryl acrylate and lauryl methacrylate and booster Additive agent called booster was synthesized by blocking isocyanate groups in hexamethylene diisocyanate with sodium bisulfate and its performance on the fabric was compared to comparable commercial sample Evo gard XL The total additives and crosslinking agents were added to conventional fluorocarbon components and then their repellency properties were compared to a LAD Laundry Air Dry fluorocarbon agent Different methods of applying each additive and crosslinking agent into fabric with fluorocarbon were studied and appropriate application methods were selected The imparted repellency and the dual action of the chemical agents were evaluated using 3M water repellency test The changes in the fabric mechanical properties was investigated by measuring tensile strength and bending length The results indicated that by using unsaturated dicarboxylic acids maleic acid MA and itaconic acid IA in the presence of a free radical initiator potassium persulfate and an esterification catalyst sodium hypophosphite as well as using DMDHEU crosslinking agent on the cotton fabrics before treatment of fabrics with fluorocarbon component the decreased repellency with washing was controlled Also simultaneous using Synthesized booster blocked diisocysnate or extenders with fluorocarbon agent on the fabric improved the performance of fluorocarbon after washing The degree of cellulose crosslinks was studied by chemical analysis and FTIR spectra In general using crosslinking agents and extenders enhanced the 3M repellency degree from 2 to 3 which is similar to the obtained results for the applied LAD fluorocarbon Keywords cotton fabrics water and oil repellency crosslinkig agents extender booster LAD fluorocarbon
