Investigation Thermal Insulation Property of Spacer Fabrics Improved by Ceramic Powders Impregnated Fabrics Mozhgan Ziaei m ziaei@tx iut ac ir Date of Submission 2011 14 3 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor M Ghane m ghane@cc iut ac ir AbstractNowadays because of limited resourses of energy thermal insulation factor is becoming very important forengineers Thus the main purpose of this work is to investigate thermal insulation property of three dimensionalknitted spacer fabrics which are improved by ceramic powders impregnated fabrics Alternative textile structuresuch as three dimensional knitted spacer fabrics have superior cyclic compression recovery properties but arenormally found in applications outside thermal insulation However due to the highly porous structure and the openapertures in the surfaces three dimensional knitted spacer fabrics usually have high air permeability and lowthermal resistance Films or some fabrics can be attached to the spacer fabric surfaces to reduce the air permeabilityand therefore minimize heat loss through convection Ceramic materials are very known and useful for thermalinsulation applications Heat flux passing through a participating medium may in general be represented by severalmechanisms free and forced convection conduction through solid fibers conduction through air in the interfiberspaces and radiation Thermal conduction is one mode of heat transfer in which an energy exchange takes placefrom the higher temperature to the lower temperature as a result of kinetic motion or direct impact of molecules Thermal radiation concerns heat transfer between two bodies by means of electromagnetic waves i e the radiationor propagation of a collection of particles termed photons or quanta A textile fabric is a heterogeneous systemconsisting of fibers and air As a general principle separation of conduction and radiation is not valid If the distancebetween the two surfaces is small and if they are separated by a transparent medium only then is it a tolerably goodapproximation to ignore the interaction of conduction and radiation In experimental work overall effective thermalconductivities were determined using a guarded hot plate instrument with temperature ranging from 36 500centigerad degree In order to study the thermal conductivity of the fabrics a hot plate was used The hot plate has auniform temperature In order to measure the temperature of cool side of the fabric an infrared thermometer
