Synthesis and Characterization of Some New Polyaspartimides with Carboxyl Pendant Group and New Polyamides with Maleimide Pendant Group Parvin Pashaie parvinpashaie@yahoo com Date of Submission 2010 11 29 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Amir Abdolmaleki abdolmaleki@cc iut ac irAbstract In this project some new polyaspartimides PAS s have been synthesized form Michael additionreaction between new synthetic Bismaleimide BMI and some aromatic diamines A characteristicproperty of this polyaspartimides is a pendent carboxylic group which introduced to these polymersfrom new Bismaleimide Bismaleimides BMI is one of the interesting compounds which can be self polymerized through double bond of maleimides that makes high crosslinked dense and brittlepolymers with poor solubility and processability Modification of BMI has an active research field toimprove processing characteristic and thermomechanical properties by reduction of crosslinking andbrittleness in polymer s structure Likewise condensation with various materials for making lowsoftening points without a reduction in the thermal stability has good effects Michael addition reactioncarried out in DMAc and p TSA have used as catalyst Synthetic polyaspartimides have good yield andmoderate viscosity in range of 0 18 0 57 dL g Desirable conditions have modified with considerationof yield and viscosity in various times of reaction Polyaspartimides are well known for theirprocessability thermal and mechanical permanence electrical photonic and flame retardantcharacteristic and various high performance applications The other attempt in this project was includedthe synthesis of new diacid as monomer with maleimide pendent group and followed out synthesis ofsome new polyamides with maleimide pendent group Thermal stability is affected by the chemicalstructure of the polymer backbone as well as of the pendent groups Aromatic polymers are well knownas high performance materials with outstanding thermal stability good chemical resistance andexcellent mechanical properties Aromatic polyamides are a very important class of high performancepolymers in various applications requiring high thermal mechanical and electrical characteristicsbecause of their unique mechanical properties and thermal stability There are many differentmodification for enhance polymer s processing solubility flexibility and thermal stability with bulkysubstituent as pendant group in polymer backbone There are many different modification for enhancepolymer s processing solubility flexibility and thermal stability with bulky substituent as pendantgroup in polymer back bone Hence the maleimide structure has been introduced into many polymericsystems aiming at improving thermal stability with high Tg The positive proceed for modifying theproperties of polyamides is the introduction of aromatic or heterocyclic rings into the polymerbackbone Reaction conditions modified with time yield and viscosity Polymers containing maleimidegroup in polymeric backbone and as pendant group are important type of thermoset polymericmaterials that have found wide applications ranging from microelectronics to aerospace due to theirgood processability high glass transition temperature and high modulus These polyamides exhibitgood yield moderate viscosity in rang of 0 32 0 39 dL g and moderate solubility which resulted fromcross linking in polymers backbone Chemical Structure of two new monomers was confirmed withFT IR 1H NMR 13C NMR and elemental analysis All of polymers characterized with FT IR andsome of them characterized with 1H NMR and elemental analysis Thermal properties of somepolymers have discussed with TGA and DSC analysis XRD analysis have used in terms of thedefinition of morphological characteristics of the polyamide and polyaspartimide that were amorph Also SEM analysis used to confirm morphology of Polyaspartimide Keywords Polyaspartimide Bism
