۱۰۵ Management of Camera Sensor Network for Maximization of Field of Coverage Neda Jonbakhsh n jonbakhsh@ec iut ac ir Date of Submission 2011 01 19 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor shadrokh samavi samavi96@cc iut ac irAdvisor niloofar gheissari n gheissari@cc iut ac irAbstract A Camera Sensor Network CSN consists of a large number of simple and small nodes distributed in anarea for environmental monitoring and surveillance Each CNS s node is composed of a small visual sensorfor sensing the physical world a processor unit for processing the sensed data a wireless communicationunit a power unit and a memory unit A sensor node may also include some other units depending on theapplication For example the node could have the capability of moving or have an energy absorption unit thatobtains energy from the physical world and a GPS unit that obtains the geographical location of the sensor In these types of networks the network s resource constraints are limited energy limited communicationrange short bandwidth limited amounts of memory and processing power To overcome these limitations different methods have recently been introduced For example in applications that an area is required to beobserved appropriate selection of a subset of sensor nodes can reduce the energy consumption and henceprolong the lifetime of the network Also compression of captured data reduces the memory usage Some ofthe most important QoS requirements of CSNs are coverage and life time Dense distribution of sensorsmight lead to coverage redundancy Hence efficient scheduling and energy management of CSNsconsiderably increase network s lifetime Selecting and activating the minimum number of sensors withmaximum coverage is one of the methods proposed to decrease the amount of energy consumption during thelifetime of the network Another important issue in CSNs that should be performed before other tasks iscamera calibration in which camera parameters such as position and orientation are determined The goal ofthis thesis is in two folds First a method is proposed for calibrating cameras in camera sensor networks Inthe proposed calibration method it is assumed that focal lengths of cameras are known In that case it isshown that by using a one dimensional object with three specific points on it the orientation and position ofeach camera are obtained Second three algorithms are proposed for camera scheduling In the proposedalgorithms the minimum number of sensors with maximum coverage is selected In the proposed algorithms sensor nodes are sorted according to their sensing area and or their remaining energy It means that a priorityis assigned to each sensor node Some priorities used in the proposed algorithms are sensing area remainingenergy and a combination of remaining energy and sensing area In the first algorithm this sorting helpselimination of sensors that their areas are covered by other ones It results in selecting a subset of the sensornodes that their coverage is equal to the coverage of the whole nodes In the second algorithm the sensorwith largest area is selected first After that sensors that cover the remaining uncovered area are selected oneafter the other In the third algorithm the area supposed to be covered is partitioned into some regions Then to cover each region the proposed algorithm selects the minimum number of sensors similar to the first andsecond algorithms Therefore the goal of this research is to develop algorithms to increase the network slifetime and guarantee the desired coverage Keywords Camera sensor network calibration coverage energy sensors activity scheduling
