Development of Low Cement Castables for the Usage in Aluminium Industry Esmaeil Adabi Firoozjaei e adabifiroozjaei@ma iut ac ir Date of Submission 2010 05 9 Department of Material Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Prof Ali Saidi a saidi@cc iut ac ir and Prof Ahmad Monshi a monshi@cc iut ac irAbstractLow cement castables containing additive materials are widely used in aluminum production industry Thelime silica ratio critically impacts the liquid phase formation at high temperatures and subsequently thecorrosion resistance and the mechanical and physical properties of the refractory In this study the effectsof microsilica and cement contents on the corrosion resistance and the physical and mechanical propertiesof Andalusite Low Cement Castables LCCs refractories were investigated The effects of addition ofdifferent calcium compounds CaO CaCO3 CaSO4 CaF2 Clinker white cement Calcia feldspar Wollastonite and Ca3 PO4 2 on physical and corrosion properties of andalusite LCC refractory were alsoinvestigated Alcoa Cup test was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the castables at 850 C and1160 C Scanning electron microscopy SEM coupled with energy dispersive spectrometer EDS alongwith optical microscopy OM and X ray diffraction XRD techniques were employed to characterize thematerials after conducting the tests The results showed that an increase in the microsilica cement ratioimproves the physical and mechanical properties of the castable however the corrosion resistance decreasessharply When a fixed amount of BaSO4 was added to the base refractory material Barium celsianformation along with glassy phase formation was observed to increase with the increase in themicrosilica cement ratio in the refractory The presence of the glassy phase formation was noted to lowerthe positive effect of Ba celsian formation on improving the corrosion resistance of the refractory Alsosecond part of this study showed that anorthite formation in the refractory matrix along with the absence ofglassy phase formation was responsible for the improvement in the corrosion resistance of andalusite basedLCC containing calcia feldspar On the other hand in the sample containing cement molten aluminum wasobserved to be unable to reduce calcium silicate phases Keywords Andalusite Low Cement Castable Microsilica cement Molten Aluminum Corrosion Non Wetting Agent
