Using of Potassium Permanganate for Surface Modification of Wool and Polypropylene Fibers Sara Ahmadi s ahmadi@tx iut ac ir Degree M sc Language Farsi Supervisor A Khoddami khoddami@cc iut ac ir Abstract Surface properties sometimes play a more important role in the funcion of polymer materialsthan do the bulk of them Many functions of the polymer materials e g ahdesion printability dyeability gloss tribology anti fogging and biocompatibility are not related to the bulk of thepolymer materials but rather to the topmost layer of the materials Hence the surface structure offibers is of the great importance for the properties of fibers and textiles in processing and use sincefriction abration wetting adhesion and liquid penetration are all affected In order to developtextile material with the desired performance the surface of fibers is often modified A widevariety of techniques have been presented to modified fibers surface with minimum effects on thebulk properties These new surface modification methods creat different functional groups on thepolymer surface by which new characteristics are apeared Wool is one of the most importantnatural fibers and is widely used in the apparel industry All features of this fibers are desirableexcept felting property Therefore shrinkproofing finishings are of the most challenges for textileindustries Hence a lot of various shrinkproofing treatments have been investigated Chlorination the cheapest and most widely used treatment for shrinkproofing of wool in industry hasenvironmental and ecological problems that have encouraged scientists to look for new treatments In this project the possibility of replacement of chlorination with potassiumpermanganate was investigated As a new method KmnO4 was applied in saturated sodium chloridesolution in order to limit the process effects to the fiber surface In the first step the optimumconcentration of the potassium permanganate and sodium bisulphite were obtained In the recentdecades using of irradiation treatments specially for surface modification of textiles has beeninvestigated because the replacement of wet finishing with low or zero effluent processes is now apriority for the textile industry Therefore in this work using of microwave irradiation in theshrinkproofing treatmrnt of wool fabrics was also studied Subsequently fabrics were padded in thepotassium permanganate and sodium chloride solution and then were exposed in the domesticmicrowave oven Furthermore Dry treatments being clearly more enviromental friendly Therefore the possible fiber surface oxidation with KmnO4 powder under microwave irradiation wasconsidered In addition the combination of Siroflash method with microwave irradiation andreplacement of hydrogen peroxide with KmnO4 in this method was investigated Anothershrinkproofing technique was applied using UV irradiation without oxidative agents By thesemethods the resistence of wool fabric to felting is 79 5 better than untreated fabric Also thereduction of tensile strength is lower than 20 respect to the untreated fabric which is similar tothe amount of soluability in alkaline solution Whiteness and yellowness index and wettability ofwool fabrics were better than untreated sample In conclusion results showed that by use of thesemethods the shrinkage of fabric was desirable while the amount of damage of wool fabrics wasacceptable The other fiber which was investigated is polypropyene This fiber is one of thepolyolefins This type of polymers exhibit the twin benefit of ease of processing and also possessexcellent physical and chemical properties However they have inert surfaces and so surface
