Synthesis and Characterization of tridentate unsymmetric Hqcq carboxamide ligand by TBAB ionic liquid and preparation of its complexes with Cu II Cd II Zn II Co III and Ni II S B Hoda Moein sadat Hoda moein@yahoo com 2011 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof M Amirnasr Email amirnasr@cc iut ac ir Abstract Ionic liquids as new reaction media and catalysts have been experimentally and theoretically recognized andaccepted They are environmentally friendly or greener alternatives to organic solvents because they have verylow vapor pressure and are non explosive and thermally stable over a wide temperature range They can beemployed as solvents for a number of chemical processes such as separation reactions two phase catalysis extractions and polymerizations The application of ionic liquids as novel media may provide convenientsolutions to both the solvent emission and catalyst reuse problem One of the new applications of ionic liquids is in the synthesis of organic compounds including amides Quinoline carboxamide ligands have been part of the growing research in the field of coordination chemistry oftransition metal complexes The solvent used in the classical method of synthesis of these compounds is pyridine a solvent which is extremely toxic We have developed a new method for the synthesis of these amides usingionic liquids as the reaction media Hqcq has been prepared under optimum conditions increasing the yield from43 to 78 and decreasing the reaction time from 4 hour to 1 hour relative to the classical method The Ni II Cu II Zn II Cd II and Co III complexes of qcq with the formula 1 Cu qcq OAc H2O 2 Cu qcq NCS 3 Cu qcq ClO4 H2O 4 Cd qcq OAc H2O 5 Zn qcq OAc H2O 6 Co qcq 2 ClO4 7 Ni qcq 2 H2O Have also been synthesized and characteraized by UV Vis FT IR 1H NMR and elemental analysis
