Modeling Habitat Suitability and Population Density Estimation of Equus hemionus onager in Touran Protect Area Mohsen Bagheri Mohsen bagheri@na iut ac ir Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Persian Supervisors Assist Prof Mahmoud reza Hemami mrhemami@cc iut ac ir Assist Prof Mansoureh Malekian mmalekian@cc iut ac irAbstractDeterminig habitat suitability and abundance estimation is essential for conservation andmanagement of wildlife resources Historically Persian wild ass Equus hemiounus onager werewidespread in arid and semi arid steppes of central Iran but today only two natural populationshave remained Onager is endemic to Iran This subspecies is listed as critically endangered CR inthe Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN The main factorscontributed to the population decline of the subspecies include poaching competition withdomestic animals protection problems drough and geographical isolation and loss of geneticvariability Accurate knowledeg about population size and habitat assocaiations of this threatenedspecies is essential for its successful consevation We studied population density and habitatassociations of Persian wild ass in Touran Protected Area Ecological Niche Factor Analysis ENFA was applied for modeling and classification of the species habitats Frequency of watersources frequency of rivers geomorphologic types geologic types vegetation types averageannual minimum temperature average annual precipitation slope aspect frequency of plains altitude distance to livestock corrals distance to roads and distance to villages were used asenvironmental variables in the analyses The presence of wild asses in the area was documented byGPS points from October 2009 to September 2010 by patrolling in the area Frequency of watersources average annual precipitation geomorphologic types distance to livestock corrals and planttypes were the most important factors determining habitat suitability of Persian wild ass Suitablehabitats were located in areas with averaged minimum temperatures of 10 to 12 C and areas closeto the hills and upper terrace where plant species such as Artemisia Zygophyllum and Pteropyrumare dominant and are not far too far from livestock corrals Habitat suitability maps were producedusing Distance geometric mean algorithm distance harmonic mean algorithm and Minimumdistance algorithm with acceptable accuracy The model classified on average 76 80 percent oftotal area for unsuitable 16 61 percent for moderate suitable and 6 5 percent for suitable habitats Contributions of marginality and specialization was calculated at 1 357 and 4 633 which showsonager is an specialist We found Ecological Nich Factor Analysis as a suitable method to studyPersian wild ass habitat selection in large scale Onager population density in the central parts ofthe area where is recognized as the most suitable habitat for onagers included Harb Plain Probal Majerad Shah Zinab Parie Plain Chah Madan Kal Mora Seghadir and Dokali was estimated The area c 1489 km2 were traversed on distance sampling line transects along the roads andriverbeds from October 2009 to late February 2010 Prependicular distances from the line to eachonager group were recorded A density of 9 onager 100km2 with the mean herd size of 6 2 onagerper group was estimated for the central part of the area Comparison of the estimated abundancewith previous estimates of onager population in this area shows a critical declining population trendfor onager in Touran Protected Area Keywords Persian wild ass Habitat suitability Ecological Niche Factor Analysis Estimatepopulation Line transect
