Zinc Distribution Between Shoots and Grain in Wheat Genotypeswith Different Zn Efficiancy as Affected by Soil Application and Foliar Spray of Zinc Mona Malian Malian mo@yahoo com 1389 12 20 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi A H Khoshgoftarmanesh amirhkhosh@cc iut ac ir Abstract Wheat makes the major staple food of people in many countries including Iran Therefore grainquality of wheat is of great importance to human health In fact it would be possible to prevent humanmalnutrition via improving quality of wheat grain Biofortification is one of the most modern approachesto improve quality of agricultural products Biofortification consisted of genetic improvements andagronomic practices Optimum fertilizer management is one aspect of agronomic biofortification Thisapproach has recently been considered by researchers for improving Zn nutritional status of food cropsand in turn human This study was carried out to investigate the effect of various zinc fertilizer treatmentson distribution of zinc in different tissues of wheat genotypes Triticum eastivum L differing in Zn efficiency In addition grain yield response of wheat genotypes to different Zn fertilizer treatments wasinvestigated Three field trials with spring and winter wheat genotypes at two locations were conducted in2006 2007 and 2007 2008 growing seasons Considering the critical deficiency level for the DTPA extracted soil Zn 2 mg kg 1 the soils were severely deficient in available Zn In trial 1 in 2008 tenspring wheat genotypes were cultivated in Isfahan and Neishaboor and exposed to five zinc fertilizertreatments no added Zn soil application of ZnSO4 foliar spray of ZnSO4 foliar spray of Omex1 andfoliar spray of Omex2 In trial 2 in 2008 ten winter wheat genotypes were cultivated in Mashhad andJolg e Rokh and exposed to four zinc fertilizer treatments no added Zn soil application of ZnSO4 foliarspray of Omex1 and foliar spray of Omex2 In trial 3 in 2007 ten spring wheat genotypes were treatedwith four zinc fertilizer treatments no added Zn soil application of ZnSO4 foliar spray of ZnSO4 attillering stage and foliar spray of ZnSO4 at anthesis stage Zinc distribution in stem leaf and grain of 10spring wheat genotypes were measured in trial 3 In all trials grain yield and crop response to differentzinc fertilizer treatments largely varied The efficacy of different fertilizer treatments in increasing yieldand grain zinc concentration was different among locations Different fertilizer treatments dependent onthe wheat genotype resulted in increase or decrease in yield grain Zn concentration or both For somewheat genotypes Zn fertilizer treatments had no significant effect on yield as well as grain zincconcentration Different fertilizer treatments had different effects on Zn concentrations in leaves andstems of spring wheat genotypes Zinc distribution and its transport to leaves stem and grain of springwheat genotypes were differently affected by Zn fertilizer treatments Soil application of ZnSO4 had thegreatest effect on increasing grain yield of wheat genotypes while foliar spray of ZnSO4 at the anthesisstage increased Zn grain concentration greater than the other fertilizer treatments According to theresults of the present study the effect of different zinc fertilizer treatments on the yield and grain qualityof wheat is in general dependent on the plant genotype location and the method of fertilizer application These factors have to be considerable in fertilizer management and breeding programs Key words wheat fertilization Biofortification yield grain foliar spray and soilapplication
