Design Development and Evaluation of a Corn Silage Bagging Machine Aref Rahimi Fard a rahimifard@ag iut ac ir 2011 3 15 Department of Agricultural Machinery Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor s Names and E mail addresses A A Masoumi Assist Prof masoumi@cc iut ac irA Hemmat Prof ahemmat@cc iut ac irAbstractKeeping corn silage in the plastic bags as bagged silage is a new method which has some advantages ascompared to placing silage in a silo Some advantages of this method include easy of storage and transport ofthe bags more nutritional quality and less product losses Manually placing cut whole corn plant in the bags isvery labor intensive and time consuming process Therefore developing a machine that can be able to producethe bagged silage automatically would be beneficial To design such a machine some of the productcharacteristics such as internal and external coefficients of friction relaxation time Poisson ratio andcompression force are needed to determine For this purpose two types of corn silage the newly harvested andensiled corn silage were prepared and tested Static coefficient of friction of the samples was determined on twotypes of contact surfaces i e galvanized and steel sheets using inclined plane method The compression testwas performed using a universal testing machine with constant loading rate Considering the results of previousresearch for compressing silage in silos the final bulk densities of the bagged silage were considered 600 and800 kg m 3 For each product the test was performed in 200 mm min 1 loading rate and in 3 repetitions Theeffects of product type contact surface and level of compression on static coefficient of friction appliedpressure modulus of elasticity and energy consumption were determined using completely randomized factorialdesign In order to express the behavior of product during compression a three element model was fitted to theexperiment data The model was consisted of a spring linked to a Maxwell body include of a spring anddashpot that connected in series in parallel Stress relaxation times of the product were determined usingMatlab software The results showed that both type of product and contact surface have significant effect on thefriction coefficient at probability level of 5 The models fitted to the compression data had coefficients ofdetermination R2 greater than 0 99 Although initial bulk density had significant effect on stress for a givenstrain the type of product did not have any significant effect The modulus of elasticity of newly corn silage wasfound to be higher than the ensiled silage Energy consumption and specific energy required for compressing theproduct increased intensively with increase in strain Type of product had significant effect on energyconsumption but not on specific energy In designing the corn silage bagger the following criteria wereconsidered low costs simplicity and ease of operation by the user Two prototypes were developed for themachine The each prototype consists of three main parts compressing and filling units bag keeper and bagzipper The evaluation of the first prototype showed that there are some problems in designing of prototype ansit cannot be useful for the purpose Whereas the evaluation of the second prototype showed that the prototypework successfully and the results were satisfactory so that the final bulk density of corn silage inside the bagswas about 800 kg m 3 Keywords newly harvested corn silage ensiled corn plastic bags Poisson ratio relaxationtime
