Synthesis of Polyurethane Elastomer Nano Composite PU MMT and Investigation of Mechanical Properties of PU Coatings on Carbon Steels Surfaces Mohsen Shenasa Mohsen shenasa@yahoo com Date of Submission Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Roohollah Bagheri bagheri @cc iut ac irAbstract In this study nano composite samples of elastomeric PU organic modified montmorillonite PU OMMT wereprepared through in situ polymerization method fllowing by oven curring in a mould An ether based pre polymer product of reaction between toluene diisocyanate and poly tetra methylene ether glycol containing isocyanateend groups was mixed with various amounts of cloisite B wt using a mechanical stirrer for hour followed by sonifiation for hour at C under N A chain extender methylene bis chloroaniline was melted and added to the mixture and stirred for mins at C by the mechanical stirrer underthe purge of N The synthesized PU elastomer samples were immediately casted in the iron moulds to form sheetand disc shape for testing Then the moulded samples were cured in an oven at various tempartures C The coating samples were also prepared by applying the synthetised PU elastomers on the steelsurface which were inserted in silicon mould Attenuated Total Reflectance fourier transform infraredspectroscopy ATR FTIR and swelling ratio measurements of the cured samples showed that a reactionoccurred between isocyanate end groups of pre polymer and hydroxyl groups of O MMT closite B Also itwas shown that adding nano particles to polyurethane matrix reduced cross link density X ray diffraction patternshowed that in and wt nano particles polyurethane chains were penetrated in the O MMT layers and wasformed intercalated structure but in wt nano particles the semi exfoliated structure was obtained Tensileresults indicated that elongation at break of the samples containing nano particles increased times more thanthe refrence sample by adding wt of nano particles to the polymeric matrix ultimate tensile strength UTS of the samples was times higher than the refrence sample More then wt organic modified montmorillonite
