Preparation of Epoxy Resin Nano Silicate Paints Investigation of Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Resistance on Carbon Steels Mohammad Nasri nasrabadi Polymer nasr@yahoo com Date of Submission 2011 04 13 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Rouhollah bagheri bagheri@cc iut ac irAbstractNanocomposite coatings have recently been of interest because of their superior technical environmental andeconomical advantages Some new solvent free nanocomposite coatings were formulated using epoxy resinand montmorillonie MMt nanoclay In this work the effect of organo modified montmorillonite cloisite30B on mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the paints epoxy resin coatings and on carbonsteel was studied The DGEBPA resin was slowly heated to 809C and then the desired amounts of clay wasgradually poured into the resin while stirring The mixture was held at 80 29C and stirred at 2000 rpm for 9 hwith a high shear mixer The above mixed compositions containing clay and resin were sonicated with ahigh power sonication instrument for 120 min The samples were then degassed in a vacuum oven at 80 29Cfor 24h At higher clay loadings a foam of tiny bubbles appeared and was removed during degassing Thepaints of these nanocomposites were prepared according to a fixed formulation and procedure Then thesepaints were coated on carbon steel surfaces 150 100 mm with 250 270 m thick The panels were dried at25 9C for 1 week the XRD patterns for the samples with different OMMT content wt the markeddiffraction peaks of OMMT were not observed for the samples with a OMMT content of 1 and 3wt whichindicates the formation of more exfoliated structure in these samples On the other hand a weak diffractionpeak was observed for the other samples with OMMT content of 5 wt which reveals that the layeredOMMT was not entirely exfoliated that is a mixture of exfoliated structures is revealed Effect of thisstructural feature on the free volume and the mechanical properties is very important The chemical andphysical interactions between ingredients in composites play an important role in the improvement of serviceproperties IR spectroscopy was also adopted to examine the intermolecular hydrogen bonding of epoxy resinwith nano particles as well as intramolecular one within polymer matrix The vibration frequency of hydroxyl and ester group shifts from 3542 to 3535 cm 1 1616 to 1612 cm 1and 1040 togroup OH 1032cm 1 respectively Measurments of mechanical properties of the nanocomposite samples indicated thatthe sample containing 3 wt nano particles could be selected for the highest properties These samplesshowed 125 7 and 400 increase in adhesion strength and impact strength respectively and 57 1 increasein abrasion resistance compared with the reference sample Measurments of mechanical properties andcorrosion resistance of the paint samples indicated that the sample containing 3 wt nano particles could beselected for the highest properties These samples showed 144 and 350 increase in adhesion strength andimpact strength respectively and 57 1 increase in abrasion resistance compared with the reference sample Anti corrosive properties of the nanocomposite were investigated using salt spray method The resultsshowed an improvement in the barrier and anti corrosive characteristics of epoxy based nanocompositecoating and a decrease in water uptake in comparison with pure epoxy coating The salt spray test of thesesamples was carried out for 1250h without any sign of the steel corrosion The reference samples withoutnano particles showed steel corrosion at 750h in salt spray test KeyWords Epoxy resin paint montmorillonit nanocomposite anti corrosive carbon steels
