Effect of Six Rootstocks on Growth of Shahmiveh and Natanzi Pear Trees Fateme iravani f iravani@ag iut ac ir 2011 Department of Horticultural Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 8415683111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof B Baninasab Baninasab @cc iut ac ir and Prof S Ghobadi cyrus@cc iut ac irAbstractRootstocks have been used for propagating temperate fruit crops for more than years Rootstocks have beenselected to impart other benefits to the scion cultivar such as improving uniformity of growth and cropping controlling tree size inducing early and aboundant cropping adaptation to unfavorable soil and climaticconditions The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the influence of four clonal rootstocks Quince A Quince B Quince C and PQBA and two seedling rootstocks Kownjony and pear on growth and performanceof two pear scion cultivars namely Shahmiveh and Natanzi During performing the experiments vegetative growthindicies including Current s season shoot length hieght of scion cultivars trunk diameters cm above the graftunion at graft union and cm below the graft union leaf relative chlorophyll content leaf stomatal conductance Gs and the substomatal carbon dioxide concentration Ci were measured and evaluated The results indicatedthat the influence of all tested rootstocks on the most vegetative parameters measured in two scion cultivars Shahmiveh and Natanzi were significant In Shahmiveh scion cultivar the trunk diameter at cm above the graftunion was significantly higher than the Natanzi pear cultivar Among the clonal and seedling rootstocks The mostrootstock impact on the trunk diameter was observed in PQBA and Kownjony rootstocks respectively and Thehighest influence of rootstocks on the trunk diameter at cm above the graft union was related toKownjony seedling rootstock as compared to Quince C rootstock with the least trunk diameter The results alsoshowed that among the tested rootstocks the diameter of the trunk at the graft union ranked the highest inKownjony and the lowest was recorded in the pear seedling rootstock The seedling rootstock of Kownjony had the most influence on trunk diameter at cm below graft union ascompared to Quince C which had the least effect reduction on the same way and also showed highlysignificant difference with the rest of tested rootstocks No significant differnces was observed between PQBAand the other two clonal rootstocks Quince A and Quince B The PQBA rootstock also showed greater trunkdiameter at cm below the graft union significantly as compared to Quince C There was no significant differenceamong the all clonal rootstocks in terms of current s season shoot length The maximum more than twice and theleast current s season growth was observed in PQBA clonal rootstock and pear seedling rootstock respectively Both scion cultivars performed the least current s season shoot length on the Quince C rootstock reduction in comparison to Kownjony seedling rootstock In terms of influencing effects of rootstock on height ofpear scion trees there was not significant differences between clonal rootstocks but the seedling rootstocksindicated difference significantly In principle no significant differences was observed in all of tested rootstocks interms of photosynthesis the results showed that the rate of photosynthesis in the scion cultivar of Shahmiveh wassignificantly higher than Natanzi pear cultivar The most relative chlorophyll content was measured in the leaves ofShahmiveh pear cultivar grafted on kowjoony seedling rootstock which in comparison to Quince B rootstock showedincrease by two times Among the clonal rootstocks the most relative chlorophyll content was observed in Quince Arootstock The effects of rootstocks on the rate of stomatal conductance and the concentration substomatal Cowere not significant But there was a significant difference between the rate of photosynthesis in the scion cultivar ofShahmiveh and Natanzi pear cultivar The overall resu
