Opportunistic Interleaving to Improve Throughput of Wireless Systems Zahra Naghsh z naghsh@ec iut ac ir Date of Submission 2011 10 07 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor J Golestani golestani@sharif eduAbstractAlthough interleaving has a long history there are some ambiguities about its application in severalsituations One of the most important scenarios highlighting this fact originates from the cross layerviewpoint to communication systems taking into account different layers of a network jointly Therefore in this vision new problems arise due to considering interactive effects between thementioned layers In this thesis the use of interleaving for communication systems is investigated anda new scheme for wireless applications is proposed based on a cross layer viewpoint It has beenassumed that forward error correction FEC and automatic repeat request ARQ are the error controlmethods in the wireless system The incoming information frames arriving at the system form a queuein an input buffer and wait to be served by the system Our proposed scheme increases the systemthroughput through the use of opportunistic interleaving Based on this scheme the average of theoverall delay that information frames undergo from the moment of entering the queue until completeservice is either reduced or increased slightly Keywords Interleaving Forward error correction ARQ Queueing delay Server delay Adaptivewireless system
