Synthesis and Characterization of Cu II Complexes With HBzabza as an Unsymmetrical Schiff base Ligand and Investigation of Catalytic Effect of Counter ion on Hydrolysis and Reorganization of Imine bond Roghayeh Sadeghi romochem@yahoo com April 9 2011 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiM Amirnasr Prof amirnasr@cc iut ac irAbstract Schiff base ligands have been in the chemistry catalogue for over 150 years Their instant and enduringpopularity undoubtedly stems from the ease with which they can be synthesized their puzzling versatilityand their wide ranging complexing ability once formed The literature clearly shows that the study of thisdiverse ligand system is linked with many of the key advances made in inorganic chemistry Not only havethey played a seminal role in the development of modern co ordination chemistry but they can also be foundat key points in the development of inorganic biochemistry catalysis medical imaging optical materials and thin films Transition metal compounds containing Schiff base ligands have also been of great interestfor many years These compounds play an important role in the coordination chemistry related to catalysisand enzymatic reactions magnetism and molecular architectures Interest in the design synthesis andcharacterization of transition metal complexes of unsymmetrical Schiff base ligands stem from the fact thatthe central metal ions in natural systems are unsymmetrical Such compounds have been suggested as usefulprobes for the study of low symmetry complexes related to the low symmetry sites found in metalloproteins These complexes are valuable to theoretical and experimental chemists Recently this class of compoundshas also attracted much attention in the field of optoelectronic technologies for their large nonlinearresponses Synthesis of such ligands is rather difficult compared to their symmetrical counterparts Moreover during the formation of metal complexes of unsymmetrical Schiff base ligands one of the major problemswhich is commonly encountered is hydrolysis which leads to rearrangements of the Schiff base On thisbasis in this thesis a new ligand HBzabza and its metal complexes which may have biochemical andelectrochemical applications are synthesized characterized and studied 1 CuII Bzabza OAc 2 CuII2 Bzabza 2 N3 2 H2O 2 3 CoII 5 nitrocalicylidenbenzylamine 2 bzln 2 The steric effects of the ligand HBzabza led to the formation of CuII Bzabza OAc with a distorted squareplanar structure The interesting phenomena is the tridentate Schiff base hydrolysis at imine linkage in thecomplex of azide and reformation of Schiff base from the other end of amine This phenomena is attributedto the presence of the counter ion Effects of transition metal ions acting as Lewis acid catalysts on organicreactions have been extensively investigated Although imines are labile and readily hydrolyzed metal ionsstabilize imine bonds present on macrocyclic rings Even though the character of counter ion in stabilizationor activation of iminic bond has not been systematically investigated recently it has been shown that the
