Effect of Feeding Safflower and Canola Seeds on Immune System and Growth Performance of Holstein Dairy Calves Seyyed Mahmood Reyhani Rostami Mahmod Reyhany@yahoo com Date of Submission 9 18 2011 Department of Animal Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor M Khorvash Khorvash@cc iut ac irABSTRACTThere is limited information on the effects and requirements of specific fatty acids for dairy calves Thereare only 2 essential fatty acids C18 2 and C18 3 yet these essential fatty acids have been shown toelongate into other functional fatty acids C20 4 C20 5 C22 6 i e that are important for neuraldevelopment and production of hormones In previous studies specific fatty acids incorporated into milkreplacers and growers have reduced scouring and improved ADG feed efficiency and hip width changein calves Also added fat has been reported to reduce intake and ADG in calves Because there is limiteddata on the effect of Linoleic acid on calf performance We hypothesize were to investigate the effects offeeding Safflower and Canola seeds to the starter diet on immune system and performance of Holsteindairy calves In trial 32 Holstein bull calves that were fed 1 of 4 treatments and 8 treatments in everyrepeat Treatments containing A no Safflower seed and Canola seed control B 5 Safflower seed C 5 Canola seed and D 2 5 Safflower and 2 5 Canola seed In order to make better palatabilitySafflower and Canola seeds in digestive system we did process on them In this case at first these seedswere heated and then grained them and added to initial diet The starters were formulated to be equal inCP and energy Calves received milk in trial fixed and equal to 10 of BW D half in the morning andhalf in the evening After birth all calves were fed enough amounts of Colostrums daily for the first 4 d and calves were individually penned Calves received every day feed Dry feed offered and feed refusalswere weighed weekly Every calf consumed 1kg diet day for three days continuously and then wasweaned Calves were weighed weekly before the feeding and fecal scores and health score were recordeddaily In order to immune system stimulation with Sheep red blood cell SRBC injection was occurredtwice 21 and 31 days after birthday and then bleed blood samples of calves 10 days after injection 31and 41 days after birthday Data from trial were analyzed using SAS statistical software and the MIXEDprocedure as a completely randomized design and initial body weight was considered as a quvariatevariable for calves was considered Time period three 1 to 3 weekly 4 to 7 weekly and 1 to 7 weekly Inthis experiment there were no differences significant among calves treatment the control diet and calvesother treatment at feed intake feed efficiency high body around chest than Albumin to Globulin healthscore and fecal score Average daily gain from 21 to 49 day p 0 01 weaning day and test antibody titer p 0 05 of calves were improved in treatment Safflower compared with calves fed the control Thisexperiment shown that using Safflower seed at cause has essential fatty acid C18 2 can as way suitablefor improvements performance in calves Keyword Oil Seed Canola Safflower Calf
