Evaluation of Some Photosyntethic and Phsiological Parameters of Four Genotypes of Oilseed Pumpkin Cucubita pepo L under Water Deficit Aliyeh Taheri a taheri 2oo8@ yahoo com August 29 2011 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Persian Supervisor Parviz Ehsanzadeh ehsanp@ cc iut ac ir AbstractDrought stress is one of the most important limiting factor for growth and production of crop plants worldwide Since arid and semi arid climate and then water deficit is prevalent in Iran this research was aimed at studyingthe impact of irrigation regimes on gas exchange properties proline content soluble carbohydrates yield andyield components of four genotyes of oilseed pumpkin A 4 replicate split plot randomized complete blockexperiment was conducted at the Lavark Research Farm College of Agriculture Isfahan University ofTechnology Isfahan Iran at 2010 Three irrigation regimes based on evaporation from a Standard Class AEvaporation Pan including irrigation after 65mm control 95 mm moderate water deficit and 130 mm severewater deficit were assigned as main plots Four genotypes of medicinal pumpkin Ardabil Chahar mahal NajafAbad and Fereydon shahr were considered as subplots Gas exchange attributes including net photosyntheticrate A leaf stomotal conductance gs and internal CO2 concentration Ci at early flowering and two weeksafter fruting relative water content proline content soluble carbohydrates content protein fruits plant seeds fruit 1000 seed weight fruit and seed yields oil percent and yield and composition of fatty acids weremeasured In both stages water deficit led to decreases in A and gs but it led to increases in the Ci Under thesevere water deficit level relative water content decreased by 29 percent compared to the control level Severedrought increased leaf proline and soluble carbohydrates contents by 96 and 103 respectively Chahar mahaland Ardabil genotypes produced the greatest and the smallest proline contents respectively Genotype Chahar mahal indicated the greatest increase in soluble carbohydrates content Effect of irrigation regimes on theprotein content wasn t significant Severe water deficit level led to 40 15 5 45 52 and 56 percent decreases infruits plant seeds fruit 1000 seed weight fruit seed and oil yield respectively compared to the control level The highest 467 23 kg ha 1 and the lowest 309 21 kg ha 1 seed yields were observed with genotypesFereydon shahr and Chahar mahal respectively Also the highest 194 31 kg ha 1 and the lowest 139 15 kg ha 1 oil yields were observed with genotypes Ardabil and Chahar mahal respectively While for Ardabil severewater deficit led to a 2 1 decrease in oleic acid for Najaf Abad it led to 2 2 and 1 7 decreases in oleic andlinoleic acid respectively The interaction of irrigation genotype for non of the traits was significant It couldbe concluded that the negative impact of water deficit stress on yield and its components in oilseed pumpkin ismainly through the decreses in the photosynthetic components Averaged over genotypes fruits plant andseeds fruit proven to have the greatest role in determining the seed yield of oilseed pumpkin Key words Oilseed pumpkin drought proline gas exchange properties yield
