92 Surface Modification of Poly Lactic Acid and Poly Ethylene Terephthalate using UV Ozone Irradiation Farnaz Sadat Fattahi F Fattahi@tx iut ac ir 30 Aug 2011 Departmant of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree MSc Language Farsi Akbar Khoddami Khoddami@cc iut ac ir Hosein Izadan izadan@cc iut ac ir AbstractPoly lactic acid PLA the rst melt processable synthetic bre produced from annually renewable resources combines ecological advantages with excellent performance in textiles PLA successfully bridges the gapbetween synthetic and natural bres and nds a wide range of uses from medical and pharmaceuticalapplications to environmentally benign lmand bres for packaging houseware and clothing processing unique property spectrum renewable source origin and ease of composting and recycling aThe effects ofexposure to UV Ozone on the surface modification and dyeing properties of poly lactic acid PLA andpoly ethylene terephthalate PET fabrics were studied Two different surface treatments were investigated 1 UV Ozone irradiation on dry fabric dry method 2 UV Ozone irradiation on distilled water hydrogenperoxide hydrogen peroxide sodium silicate impregnated fabrics wet method The surface modified PLA andPET fabrics was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopyusing FTIR moisture regainmeasurements and scanning electron microscopy SEM The results show that UV Ozone treatment of the PLAand PET fabrics improved wettability created oxygen containing moieties at the fibre surface and resulted inetching and roughening of the surface For the PET fabric the wet method showed higher enhancement than thedry method However for the PLA fabric such enhancement was converse These observations are due to thepolymer chain scission that may happen for the PLA fabric after the treatment with those methods The differencebetween the behaviours of the PLA and PET fabrics could be related to the compact structure and aromaticpolymer chain of PET The untreated and the treated PLA and PET fabrics were dyed with two Black and Blue disperse dyes to investigate the possibility of achieving deep dyeing of the fabrics treated with wet method Theconsequence of the results with the results obtained from the untreated dyed samples indicate that improving inthe depth of dyeing can be obtained by the surface treatment of the PLA and the PET fabrics using the wetmethod The results show that the UV Ozone treatment reduces the samples reflectance values in allwavelengths but this reduction is different in various regions of the visual spectrum Regarding the resultsobtained from the SEM images of the samples such reduction may be considered as a consequence of the surfaceroughening of the fabrics owing to the UV Ozone treatment with the subsequent reduction in the reflectance ofthe samples due to destructive interference phenomenon Another possible reason for this observation is theincrease in the rate of dyeing of the treated samples which may happen due to the roughening of the surface TheL values of the untreated and treated samples showed similar trend as the corresponding spectral values However comparison among the treated samples show that in some cases the L values do not show the similartrend as the spectral values such observation is more likely to be the results of the fact that the reductions in thespectral values of the samples in the extreme values of the visual spectrum is more than the other regions whilethe photonic luminous efficiency function V or y shows an opposite trend Key wordsUV Ozone treatment Surface roughening Poly lactic acid Poly ethylene terephthlate
