Removal of Sulphur Dioxide Pollutant in Air by Liquid Ammonia to Produce Ammonium Sulphate Fertilizer Seyed Mohammad Hosein Hashemi sm hashemi@ce iut ac ir 13 September 2011 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Arjomand Mehrabani arjomand @cc iut ac irAbstractElimination Reduction of discharged pollutants on environment is an essential requirement for human life Combustion of fossil fuel is the main source for pollution of air by emission of a variety of substances suchas sulphur dioxide SO2 Its emission is source of various hazards for environment such as the formation ofacid rain There are various flue gas desulphurization FGD processes They have classified in four maincategories of wet scrubbers spray dry scrubbers sorbent injection and re generable processes Each categoryis consisted of several processes depending on chemical reactions flow conditions and product Largenumber of products such as ammonium sulfate which has several important applications such as fertilizersand medical applications can be formed in ammonia based wet desulphurization processes So ammonia based wet flue gas desulphurization has drawn increasing attention due to its high SO2 removal efficiency low investment and useful products The efficiency of the desulphurization process and purity of producedammonium sulfate have studied based on response surface methodology RSM which enables to examinethe effect of involved parameters with in a moderate number of experiments All experiments were conductedin Isfahan Oil Refinery laboratory with a pilot scale system for ammonia wet flue gas desulphurization Purity of ammonium sulfate was determined by X Ray Diffraction XRD analysis The main product whichhas been found in this thesis was ammonium sulphate and other by products were ammonium sulphite andammonium pyrosulphite The minimum and maximum efficiency of desulphurization were 93 87 and100 While minimum Purity of ammonium sulfate was zero the experiment with pure water whilefeed flow rate was 1 5 lit min with SO2 concentrations of 2600 ppm and ammonia concentrations of 0 2 N at24 C the purity of ammonium sulfate was maximum 65 1 Concentration of SO2 in gas phases weremeasured by TESTO analyzer The efficiency of desulphurization correlated well with operating parameters including inlet SO2 concentration in range of 600 4600 ppm temperature in range of 12 36 C flow rate in range of 0 5 2 5 lit min and ammonia concentration in range of 0 0 4 N with a determinationcoefficient R Sq of 0 9011 The derived models were modified quadratic equations The result indicates thatthe offered response surface model is helpful to describe the degree of desulphurization of the ammonia wetFGD reactor Based on the implemented experimental design method the ammonia concentration had themost significant influence on the efficiency of desulphurization process Prob F 0 0013 By increasingammonia concentration efficiency of desulphurization had increased but resulted in reduction of ammoniumsulphate purity Based on a published research resulted the effect of temperature on desulphurization sefficiency was high but in this research the temperature parameter was not effective due to limited range ofparameters Increasing of temperature as same as increasing of inlet sulphur dioxide concentration reducedthe purity of ammonium sulfate product Experimental results showed that in up and down range of inletsulphur dioxide concentration the efficiency of desulphurization became Maximum Also effect of pollutantair flow variable on both responses is not independent and this variable increases other parameters effect Keywords flue gas sulphur dioxide ammonia scrubbing ammonium sulfate fertilizer response surface methodology
