Effects of Replacing Different Physical Forms of Wheat Grain in Corn Based Starter on Performance of New Born Holstein Dairy Calves Nahid Pezhveh Pezhveh 401hh@yahoo com Date of Submission 2011 11 30 Department of Animal Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor G R Ghorbani Ghorbani@cc iut ac irAbstractThe objective of the present study was to examine the effects of replacing wheat grain with two physical forms withcorn on starter intake average daily gain ADG feed efficiency rumen pH weaning weight skeletal growth andblood parameters of neonatal dairy calves For this purpose thirty two male of Holstein dairy calves n 8 calves pertreatment were used in a completely randomized design At d 3 of age individually housed calves were randomlyallocated to different treatments consisting of starter with 60 ground corn GC starter with 60 whole corn WC starter containing 30 ground corn plus 30 ground wheat GCGW or a starter containing 30 groundcorn with 30 whole wheat GCWW Starter intake growth and blood parameters were monitored during pre weaning d 1 to 52 and post weaning d 52 to 70 periods The starters were formulated to be equal in CP andenergy Calves received milk in trial fixed and equal to 10 of BW D half in the morning and half in the evening After birth all calves were fed enough amounts of colostrums daily for the first 3 d All calves was weaned 52 d Calves received every day feed and were weighed per 10 d before the feeding and then bleed blood samples ofcalves in age 30 40 50 60 and 70 d Data from trial were analyzed using SAS statistical software and the MIXEDprocedure as a completely randomized design and initial body weight was considered as a quvariate variable Thedata show that daily starter intake of GCWW group significantly was higher in comparison to other groups in post weaning period Calves fed whole wheat had significantly greater ADG comparison to other groups in totalexperiment The data in pre weaning show that Average daily gain of GCWW group was significantly greatercompared with WC group p 0 03 At post weaning average daily gain was greatest in calves fed GCWW andfollowed by WC group but GCWW group significantly had a greater ADG compared with calves fed GC andGCGW groups 1 063 kg Vs 0 736 and 0 617 respectively There were no differences at pre weaning in bodylength hip width hip height and wither height among the treatments but differences were significant in heart girthand body girth At post weaning some of body measurements body length hip height hip width heart girth andwither height were the greatest in calves fed GCWW diet however WC group had greater body girth in comparisonto other groups Feed efficiency in calves fed GCWW diets was only significantly higher in compared to GCGWgroup p 0 04 but not with others Blood glucose reduced with age in calves however blood BUN BHBA Albumin and Total protein increased with time p 0 01 Comparing the fecal score showed that no differencewere observed between treatments In Conclusion results of current study showed that feeding starters with wholewheat and ground corn improve performance of new born dairy calves in comparison to GCGW WC and GC diets Key words dairy calves starter physical form wheat performance
