Continuous Synthesis of Di and Triacetin in Pilot Scale Ehsan rafieipoor E Mail E Rafiei88@gmail com February 27 2012 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof Hassan S Ghaziaskar E Mail ghazi@cc iut ac irAdvisor Prof Mohammad YalpaniDepartment Graduate Program Coordinator Prof Bijan Najafi Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Tel 98 311 3912369 Fax 98 311 3912350Abstract A pilot scale continuous reactor was used to synthesize glycerol acetates that are diand triacetin with a high percentage of tri compared to di in a solvent free media usingglycerol and acetic acid and homogeneous catalysts Paratoluene sulfonic acid and sulfuricacid was used as catalyst and the effect of several variables on the yield and the selectivityof the reaction were investigated such as catalyst type and their concentration reactortemperature acetic anhydride addition as an acetylating agent and the design of reactor The yield and selectivity of synthesized glycerol acetates also glycerol conversion in eachexperiment was determined using GC FID The effect of temperature on the reaction wasalso inspected from 110 to 140 C with 1 wt paratoluene sulfonic acid as catalyst Resultsshowed that wih increasing temperature the percentage of glycerol conversion alsotriacetin selectivity increased Increasing paratoluene sulfonic acid concentration at 140 Cled to higher selectivity of triacetin and glycerol conversion When sulfuric acid was usedas catalyst a large amount of by products were obtianed that limits the solubility ofsynthesized product in fuel The decolorization of product was carried out by means ofseveral decolourizing agents among them activated bentonite by sulfuric acid andhydrochloric acid 3 5 M had the maximum influence Key words glycerol acetic acid paratoluene sulfonic acid diacetin triacetin pilot scalecontinuous reactor
