An Experimental Study on the Effect of Nanoparticles on Freeze and Thaw Resistance of Concrete Pavements Niloofar Salemi n salemi@cv iut ac ir February 2012 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Kiachehr Behfarnia kia@cc iut ac irAbstract The freezing and thawing is one of the major problems of concrete pavements in cold climates so it isvery important for concrete pavements to be durable enough because they are in direct relation to theweather conditions Along the years widespread researches have been done around the world to usedifferent materials in order to enhance the durability of concrete pavement On the other hand nanotechnology has brought possibilities to use nano particles to improve the operation of constructionmaterials in recent decades Nanotechnology is defined as the understanding control and restructuring ofmatter on the order of nanometers to create materials with fundamentally new properties and functions Nano particles are particles with dimensions between 1 to 100 nanometers Nano silica and nano aluminaare pozzolanic materials which have high rate of pozzolanic reaction because of their high surface area tovolume ratio providing the potential for tremendous chemical activity These nano particles can act asnuclei for cement phases further promoting cement hydration due to their high reactivity as nanoreinforcement and as filler densifying the micro structure thereby leading to reduced porosity The main goal of this research was to study the effect of nano particles on mechanical properties anddurability of concrete pavement in the case of frost resistance Nano particles were employed as a partialreplacement for cement For comparison the frost resistance of concrete containing polypropylene fiberswas also studied Totally 441 normal concrete specimens with water to cementitious materials ratio W CM of 0 48 were prepared using single and binary binders Concrete specimens contained nano silica 0 3 5 and 7 by the weight of cementitous materials and nano alumina 0 1 2 and 3 by theweight of cementitous materials incorporating polypropylene fibers 0 0 1 and 0 2 by the volume ofconcrete In order to determine the mechanical properties of concrete samples compressive strength andthe percentage of water absorption were measured The effects of freeze thaw cycles on concrete werestudied by measuring the variation of compressive strength length weight and water absorption ofspecimens after 45 150 and 300 cycles of freezing and thawing Experimental results show that both nano particles and polypropylene fibers enhance frost resistance of concrete Mechanical properties of concretecontaining nano silica particles were considerably improved Nano alumina particles enhanced thecompressive strength of specimens slightly Polypropylene fibers did not affect the compressive strength ofconcrete Both Nano silica and nano alumina fibers decreased the water absorption of concreteconsiderably The performance of nano particles in enhancing the durability of concrete is much better thanthat of polypropylene fibers It is also included that nano silica is more effective in enhancing compressivestrength and durability of concrete than nano alumina Keywords Concrete Pavement freeze thaw cycles nano particles PolyPropylene Fibers
