Dynamic Facility Layout Problem with Workflow Interference Consideration Seyed Farzad Hoseini Sf hoseini@in iut ac ir Date of Submission 2012 03 13 Department of Industrial Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor A Shahandeh Ali nook@cc iut ac irAbstractNowadays due to compettetive and global markets there exist more changabillity in design ofproducts and life cycle of products has become too short Therefore in most industries productsare under alternation and this issue has direct influence on layout of facilities Regarding thatchanges of demand increases costs of the organization because of adaptation hence organizationsseek methods for satisfying demands with less costs In this regard recently Dynamic FacilityLayout Planning DFLP has been considred by many researchers DFLP based on prediction ofchanges that might occur in material flow in future divides the future into time periods and yeildsan efficient layout by minimizing summation of material transportation and rearrangement costs Plenty of factors are at work in proposing an efficient design for an industrial unit In moststudies transportation cost of materials has been considered as the most significant criterion Butby considering the current competiveness and short life cycle merely enalyzing this criterion maynot be appropriate It is obvious in different conditions those criteria should be considred whichare acossiated with that condition The effect of material flow intersection is of great importance in planning layout of facilities Incompanies and industrial units because of various transportation vehicles moving of personneland performing operations of loading and unloading the intersection of material flow is increased Moreover space is a vital issue in both company and warehouse Therefore aisles are narrowersince they restrict the production area The intersection of material flow has been considered formboth designing and operating perspectives Although there have been many deveopments onlayout planning problems few studies has targeted intersections as a part of overall view to layoutplanning problem Thus in this research initially material flow intersections are formulated thenits effects on DFLP are investigated in order to design a better and more proper layout and alsomulti objective dynamic facilities layout plannig model by cinsidering inetrsection of materialflow is proposed Multi objecive dynamic layout planning like its classic model is complicatedand time consuming for solving hence a large part of this research is dedicated to analyzing andevaluating solving methods of the proposed multi objective model Because of hardness of themodel to deal with it in smal dimensions Dynamic Programming is used and for largerdimensions meta heuristic algorithms as GA and PSO are applied By using available data inliterature these methods are assessed Results show that using Particle Swarm OptimizationAlgorithm in small dimensions and Genetic Algorithm in large dimensions can be useful Keywords Dynamic Facility layout Problem Workflow intersections Particle SwarmOptimization Algorithm Genetic Algorithm Dynamic Programming
