Determining the Best Pollenizer of Conservalia and Fishomi Rodbar Olive Olea europaea L in Fars Province Mohammad Taghi Esfandiari Bayat MTSB84@gmail com February 2012 Department of Horticultural Science IsfahanUniversity of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Assoc Prof B Baninasab bbanin@cc iut ac irAbstract The viability of the olive industry depends on harvesting an economic yield of fruit which can be used for oil production and table olives Despite a profusion of flowers onolive trees only a few set fruit in a growing season One of the most reasons for this lowfruit to flower ratio is pollen compatibility relationships among cultivars Pollination is oneof the most important factors for a good productivity It is important for growers tounderstand the pollen compatibility between cultivars when planning an olive orchard inorder to maximize fruit set and yields Therefore the aim of this study was to determinesuitable pollinizer for Conservalia and Fishomi Rodbar olive cultivar which may beincrease the productivity and fruit quality The studies were carried out in two experimentalorchards of Conservalia and Fishomi Rodbar trees located in Kazeron and Shiraz respectively in two years The experiment layout was a randomized complete block designwith four replications For Conservalia cultivar a set of selected shoots on each replication tree received the following treatments self pollination open pollination cross pollinationwith Gordal Sevilano pollen Fishomi Rodbar pollen Roghani pollen and mixture ofall cultivars pollen In second year the treatments Dakal pollen and Koroneiki pollenwere added to other treatments For Fishomi Rodbar cultivar treatments in two years werethe same and included self pollination open pollination cross pollination with Roghani pollen Zard pollen Tokhm Kabki pollen Dezful pollen Shiraz pollen Bash pollen and mixture of all cultivars pollen For the treatment of pollen mixture equal amounts byweight of pollens of the given cultivars were combined Pollen collection was carried outby bagging flowering shoots of each pollinizer trees before anthesis and shaking them afterfull bloom The collected pollen was stored in small glass bottles at 4 C until use Someflowering shoots per host tree were chosen for different crosses One hundred flowers pershoot were selected just before opening at ballon stage except self and open pollinationtreatment emasculated with forceps and crossed using a fine paintbrush To avoidunwanted pollen hands and all equipment were washed with 70 ethanol after every cross The pollinated shoots except open pollination treatment were isolated using paper bags Twenty days after emasculation paper bags were removed The percentage of fruit set was calculated in twenty one days after emasculation mid summer and harvest time Also at
