Sheet Metal Forming Using CNC Machine With Measurement and Analysis of Process Force Farhad Rabiei Email address f rabiei@me iut ac ir Date of Submission 2012 02 27 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Seyed Mohsen Safavi mosafavi@cc iut ac ir AbstractNecessity of using types of metals in many kinds and shapes in human different activities has always obligedhim by invention of new ways plods in forming and transfiguration of metal parts field Among the newmethods in sheet metal forming in this research has been studied a new technique called Incremental SheetMetal Forming or ISMF Incremental sheet metal forming has demonstrated its great potential to formcomplex three dimensional parts without using a matching die The process locally deforms sheet metalusing a moving tool head achieving higher forming limits than those of conventional sheet metal stampingprocess The die less nature in incremental forming provides a competitive alternative for economically andeffectively fabricating low volume functional sheet products Potential application areas include aerospaceindustries customized products in biomedical applications and prototyping in the automotive industry TwoPoint Incremental Forming TPIF is a variant of incremental forming in which flat metal sheets are graduallyformed into 3D shapes using a generic tool stylus This new forming method is especially suitable for smallbatch production and rapid prototyping of sheet metal parts In this process sheet metal is inserted on apunch with special shape in order to produce required deformation by incremental movement of forming tool Therefore creation of complex shapes from sheet metals is achieved In this way via the incrementalmovement in the forming tools using Computer Numerical Controlled CNC machine suitable form in sheetis produced This project has been surveyed experimental and laboratory approaches of TPIF technique Inother words one of the important objectives of this project is required equipment preparing and gaining ofability in ISMF performance Because always in practical space of a process there are specific conditionsand parameters that adequate control over these factors and also the ability in performance of fine and fulltests of one method is very important Experimental tests have been performed with regard to the aluminumand brass sheets in various thicknesses Also in order to ensure from the proper performance of tests amongsome of the important parameters in the test results and correlate references is presented a completecomparison Moreover in this research force as important and influential parameter in a forming process ismeasured Indeed depending on the sheet material thickness and etc considerable forces can occur A goodknowledge of these forming forces can contribute to the preservation of the tooling and the machinery usedin the process Also has been investigated effect of four parameter tool diameter sheet thickness verticalstep down of tool and kind of tool movement on process force and formability of sheet metal It should benoted that in this effort the measurement and online observation of process force has been implemented bytwo loadcell sensors and LabVIEW software that is new and innovative method Key WordsSheet Metal Forming Incremental Forming Process Computer Numerical Controlled CNC Machine Experimental Tests Forming Force
