y Preparation and Investigation of Mechanical Properties of PC ABS Blends Using Recycled Materials Effect of Different Compatibilizers Alireza Farzadfar a farzadfar@ce iut ac ir Date of Submission 01 02 2012 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Saied Nouri Khorasani saied@cc iut ac irAbstract In this research polycarbonate acrylonitrile butadiene styrene PC ABS blends based on recycled materialswere prepared with the ratio of 70 30 and some physical mechanical and morphological properties of themwere investigated Because of these blends are partially miscible the use of compatibilizer is inevitable Sofor compatibilizing these blends two different types of compatibilizers ABS g MA with two differentgrafting degrees of 1 5 and 8 and EVA g MA with grafting degree of 1 5 were used The alloys wereprapared by using a corotating and Intermeshing twin screw extruder with L D of 40 and then each samplewere granulated after extrusion with a pelletizer Moreover for doing the mechanical tests such as tensileand impact the samples were injected by using an injection molding machine In regard to the type of thechosen compatibilizers which have maleic anhydride groups on their chains these compatibilizers areconsidered as the type of reactive compatibilizers For preparing the samples first one sample is supplied asthe control sample without applying any compatibilizers and just contained the basic constitutivecomponents of blends namely PC and ABS For comparing the influence of using different compatibilizerson mechanical properties of these blends the blends were prepared with the use of 3 phr 5 phr and 10 phr ofall compatibilizers ABS g MA with grafting degree of 1 5 ABS g MA with grafting degree of 8 andEVA g MA The results show that the blend without any compatibilizer have higher melt flow index while compatibilized blends have lower melt flow indexes and in these blends by increasing the amount ofcompatibilizer melt flow index increased gradually This phenomenon confirms better interfacial adhesion ofcomponents in compatibilized blends in comparison with uncompatibilized ones Also the use of ABS g MAas a compatibilizer had no significant effect on tensile strength of prepared blends Moreover the use ofABS g MA as compatibilizer led to increase the notched charpy impact strength of alloys The maximumincrease appeared for ABS g MA with grafting degree of 1 5 was about 1 5 times and for ABS g MA withgrafting degree of 8 was about 1 9 times more than uncompatibilized blends Also the use of EVA g MAas a compatibilizer led to decrease in amount of tensile strength and the maximum decrease obtained with useof 10 phr of this compatibilizer and it was about 9 This result may because of the rubbery nature of EVA Moreover the notched charpy impact strength of alloy with using EVA g MA as reactive compatibilizer increased more than 2 6 times in comparison with uncompatibilized blend with use of EVA g MA by amountof 5 phr Also the scanning electron microscopy photomicrographs shows that the particle size of dispersedphase was decreased in continuous phase of polycarbonate It should be noticed that the minimum size ofdspersed particle size obtained with the use of EVA g MA The results of differential scanning calorimetrytests show that the use of ABS g MA and EVA g MA as reactive compatibilizers led to shift in peaks ofglass transition temperatures of PC and ABS that indicates good compatibility of these alloys in comparisonwith uncompatibilized blend Keywords polycarbonate ABS alloy compatibilizer recycle mechanical properties
