Synthesis and Characterization of Mn III Fe III Ni II And Cu II Complexes With H2Bzacabzasal as an Unsymmetrical Schiff base Ligand and Investigation of Catalytic Effect of Counter Anion on Hydrolysis and Reorganization of Imine Bond Somaye Motaharipour smotaharipour@gmail com Feb 26 2012 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiM Amirnasr Prof amirnasr@cc iut ac irAbstractN substituted imines also known as Schiff bases compound that represent one of the most widely used families oforganic compounds In general they are easily prepared by the condensation reaction of primary amines withcarbonyl compounds The first reports of this kind of reaction have been published by Hugo Schiff in the 1860s Thereafter Schiff bases have been intensively used as synthetic intermediates and as ligands for coordinatingtransition and inner transition metal ions Schiff bases are generally bidentate tridentate tetradentate or polydentateligands capable of forming very stable complexes with transition metals Schiff base metal complexes have beenwidely studied because they have industrial antifungal antibacterial anticancer antiviral and herbicidalapplications They serve as models for biologically important species and find applications in biomimetic catalyticreactions They can act as radiopharmaceuticals for cancer cell targeting Besides the biological activity solid statethermochromism and photochromism are another characteristic of these compounds leading to their application invarious areas of materials science such as the control and measurement of radiation intensity display systems andoptical memory devices The synthesis and structural research of unsymmetrical Schiff base ligands such asH2Salabza H2Naphtabza H2Pyrabza HBacabza as well as their metal complexes have been the focus of interest inour research group in recent years In continuation of our work the unsymmetrical Schiff base H2Bzacabzasal ligandand the complexes MnIII Bzacabzasal N3 EtOH 2 MnIII Bzacabzasal NCS CH3OH 3 FeIII salabza Cl 4 NiII Bzacabzasal 5 CuII Bzacabzasal 6 have been synthesized and characterized in this project In anattempt for the synthesis of Fe III complexes from H2Bzacabzasal ligand the hydrolysis of Schiff base ligand hasoccurred and the FeIII salabza Cl has been produced by template reaction Formation of this complex isdependent on the presence of Cl counter ion and activation of imine bond by this ion to assist its final hydrolysis The H2Bzacabzasal ligand and its complexes were characterized by UV Vis FT IR 1H NMR and elementalanalyses The ligand and complexes 2 3 4 and 5 were structurally characterized by X Ray diffraction Theelectrochemical properties of the compounds were also studied using cyclic voltammetry Key Words 1 Unsymmetrical Schiff base ligand 2 Transition metal complexes 3 Hydrolysis of Schiff base 4 Spectroscopicproperties 5 X ray crystal structure 6 Cyclic voltammetry
