Reproductive Biology of Stripped Piggy Pomadasys stridens in Northern Part of Persian Gulf Bushehr Sajjad Karimi S Karimi @Gmail com Date of Submission Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Nasrollah Mahboobi Soofiani Soofiani@cc iut ac ir Fatemeh Paykan Heyrati fheyrati@cc iut ac ir AbstractStripped piggy Pomadasys stridends is widely distributed in coastal waters of Persian Gulf However thereproductive characteristics of this fish were poorly studied The purpose of present work was to elucidatesome features of the sexual cycle fecundity nature and spawning period of Pomadasys stridens in thePersian Gulf Specimens of Pomadasys stridens were collected from the commercial catches at bushehrfishery harbor from May to April by regular monthly collections A total of specimens including males and females were collected and transported to Bushehr fishery research center andthen to Isfahan university of technology for analysis The total length cm as well as the total weight g of the fish was recorded The total length of mature fish ranged from to cm in females and from to cm in males The weight of mature fish ranged from to g in females and from to g inmales After carrying out biometrical measurements fish were dissected and gonads were removed weighed to the nearest mg and thoroughly examined for determination of its sex and maturity stage Forhistological examination pieces of the gonads were fixed in formalin for hours and then moved to ethanol In both length and weight females showed larger size than males Age groups in both sexes weredetermined and ranged between and years Monthly distribution of GSI for female and male P stridens showed that the GSI values have two peaks the first one which was smaller occured in December and thesecond one the maximum was in march The GSI values for females and males fluctuated similarlythroughout sampling period Condition factor for both sexes showed no significant differences Theminimum and the maximum of absolute fecundity were and respectively The relativeminimum and maximum fecundity was and respectively Oocytes were colourless spherical shaped and pelagicous The curvilinear relationship between fecundity and total weight of fish is explainedby the equation F W The minimum and the maximum ova diameter was m stage and t m stage The mean of the sex ratio was M F According to the GSI ovadiameter and histological observations spawning period was determined from December to March Fivesexual maturity stages were determined for females P stridends as follows stage Immature stage developing stage ripening stage spawning and stage spent According to present finding themode of oocyte development in ovary of P stridens is considered group synchronous and all of thedeveloping clutch of oocytes release together during spawning season Key words Reproduction Stripped piggy Pomadasys stridens group synchronous Persian Gulf Bushehr province
